Diese Studie geht der Frage nach, wie sich Vorstellungen von Gender im Pariser Stadtraum manifestieren. Exemplarisch stehen das Stadtzentrum und die Repräsentationsräume für die vergeschlechtlichte Konstruktion von Stadtraum. Zeitrahmen ist das 19. This study explores how concepts of gender permeated and shaped urban space in 19th century Paris. It focuses on the city center and on publicly accessible symbolic spaces used for representing state, nation, class or milieu. Chronologically the study concentrates on the second half of the 19th century as this was the period where most of the urban development measures were implemented which shaped the characteristic cityscape of modern day Paris. The most important source is the city itself, complemented by contemporary newspaper and journal articles as well as travel guides, literary city descriptions and the plethora of illustrations contained therein. Based on the idea of relational space proposed by Martina Löw this sturdy perceives the city as a multidimensional and gendered space. Combining architecture and textual and visual sources the study creates a gender-topography of 19th century Paris: A description of the city focused on the discursive construction of gender within the urban space/ the discursive gendering of urban space. Methods used are discourse analysis and urban semitiocs (“Stadtsemiotik”), the latter being an innovative semiotic method for decoding the symbolic levels of space. It is based on the assumption that man-made environment inevitably is an expression of social and cultural context. The representational spaces are tied to the gender concepts of society’s elites.
