Die Grundlage für diese Arbeit bildet die zentrale Fragestellung „Welchen Stellenwert beziehungsweise welche Wertigkeit nimmt die moderne Olympische Bewegung in Österreich unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der vorherrschenden sport- und turnpolitischen Landschaft ein?“ Das vorrangige Ziel ist eine umfangreiche sozial-historische Aufarbeitung der modernen Olympischen Bewegung in Österreich vom Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs 1918 bis zum „Anschluss“ an Deutschland 1938. Dies verlangt zum einen eine ausführliche Bearbeitung der gesellschafts-, sport- und turnpolitischen Rahmenbedingungen und zum anderen einer Darstellung der Fundamente der modernen Olympischen Bewegung sowie der Organisation des Olympischen Sports in Österreich. Erst auf Basis dieser komplexen Zusammenhänge lässt sich der langwierige, beschwerliche und mitunter von Rückschlägen geprägte Weg zu einer Etablierung des Olympischen Gedankens in Österreich verstehen. Nur langsam reiften in einem Korsett politischer Radikalisierung und gesellschaftlicher Tristesse die Bewusstmachung der Olympischen Bewegung und das öffentliche Interesse für die Olympischen Spiele. Durch den fortwährenden Anstieg der medialen Präsentation der Olympioniken sowie deren Erfolge und Leistungen stieg die Akzeptanz der Olympischen Spiele und des Sports in der österreichischen Bevölkerung. In gleichem Maße fungierte der Sport immer mehr als Triebkraft und als ein wesentliches Element hin zu einem gestärkten Nationalbewusstsein.

The fundamental question being investigated within this paper is “Which value has the modern Olympic movement in Austria in particular consideration of the prevailing sport political landscape?” The primary objective is a comprehensive social-historical examination of the modern Olympic movement in Austria from the end of the First World War in 1918 until the annexation by Germany in 1938. On the one hand this requires a detailed discussion of social, sporting and political conditions and on the other hand an illustration of the foundations of the modern Olympic movement as well as the organization of the Olympic sport in Austria. The investigation of these extensive contexts is a prerequisite to understand the establishment of the Olympic idea in Austria, which was sometimes a lengthy and arduous process also marked by setbacks. Public awareness of the Olympic Movement and interest into the Olympic Games matured only slowly and corseted by political radicalization and societal sadness. The continuous rise of the media presence of the Olympic athletes and their successes and achievements increased the acceptance of the Olympic Games and Sports in the Austrian population. In the same degree sports worked out more and more as an incitement and a constitutive element towards an enhanced national identity.
