Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit befasst sich mit dem Thema der walisischen Identität im Kontext des konstitutionellem Wandels seit dem Devolution-Referendum von 1997 und dem damit einhergehenden Entstehen der National Assembly for Wales. Was genau ist überhaupt eine ‚walisische Identität‘? Wie definiert sich diese Identität innerhalb des multinationalen Großbritannien? Die Arbeit wendet sich einerseits dem historischen Entstehen der walisischen Nation zu, andererseits wird der Schwerpunkt auf die aktuellen historischen Ereignisse – die Devolution-Referenden, sowie das Entstehen der Welsh Assembly – gelegt, um zu hinterfragen wie die politischen Veränderungen das Verständnis der Kulturnation gegenüber ihrer Identität geprägt haben. Ein weiterer Kernpunkt der Arbeit ist der Aspekt der Sprache, dem wohl wichtigsten Merkmal der walisischen Identität.
Um den Einfluss von Devolution auf die (Re-)Konstruktion der Identität möglichst breit zu erfassen, wurden narrative Interviews durchgeführt, deren Auswertung sich im letzten Teil der Arbeit findet. Dabei konnte festgestellt werden, dass die Bedeutung der Welsh Assembly vor allem in ihrem symbolischem Charakter liegt, mit wesentlichem Einfluss auf das walisische Selbstbewusstsein. Eine höhere Identifizierung mit Wales ist zwar nicht direkt mit Devolution in Verbindung zu setzen, dennoch hat der konstitutionelle Wandel Einfluss auf die walisische Kulturnation ausgeübt. Vor allem die innerwalisischen Grenzen und Differenzierungen sind in den letzten Jahren immer mehr im Rückgang begriffen und auch die walisische Sprache scheint einen Bedeutungsaufschwung zu erfahren. Dies wird deutlich an der stetig steigenden Zahl an Sprecher/innen. Nichtsdestotrotz ist die Anzahl der walisischen Communities – die bedeutendsten Träger der walisischen Traditionen und Identität – weiterhin stark im Rückgang begriffen, einer Problematik, der man sich erst jetzt immer mehr bewusst wird.

The present thesis addresses the topic of Welsh identity in context of the constitutional change since the devolution referendum of 1997 and the construction of the National Assembly of Wales. What exactly is a Welsh identity? How is this Identity defined within a multinational Great Britain? The thesis deals with the historical aspects of building the Welsh nation on the one hand, and the latest events – the devolution referendum as well as the construction of the Welsh Assembly – on the other hand; thereby addressing the question how political changes have influenced the identity of the Welsh nation. Another aspect is the Welsh language, the main distinguishing mark of Welsh identity.
To obtain a really broad understanding of the impact of Devolution on the (re-) construction of identity qualitative research in the form of narrative interviews with Welsh people has been carried out. The analysis of these will be found in the last section of this thesis. The findings of these interviews were that the main importance of the Welsh Assembly is more or less a symbolic one with a major impact on Welsh self-confidence. Although a higher identification with Wales and Welshness cannot be put in connection with devolution, the constitutional change has had an impact on the Welsh nation. Most notably is the decline of the borders and differentiations within Wales in the last years. Furthermore the Welsh language is getting more important. This is shown in the increasing number of Welsh speakers. Nevertheless, the decline in the number of Welsh communities, which are directly responsible for carrying on the Welsh tradition and identity, is a real problem people have to face.
