Die metaphorische Aufladung der Stadt mit Sinn, Bedeutung und Identität nimmt in der gegenwärtigen kulturanalytischen Stadtforschung einen wichtigen Platz ein. Nun stellt sich die Frage, in welchem Maße die vielfach hergestellte Verbindung von Stadt und Bedeutung zu analytischen Erkenntnissen über das historische Funktionieren der Stadt, ihrer Wahrnehmung und der Identitäts-Konstituierung der Stadt an sich beiträgt. Diese Frage will diese stadtanthropologische Untersuchung über Havanna behandeln und aus drei unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln thematisieren: (1) dem Image der Stadt, (2) dem Imaginären der Stadt und (3) dem Gedächtnis der Stadt. Im ersten Abschnitt dieser Dissertation gehe ich Prozessen einer neu-inszenierten Bildproduktion Kubas seit 1991 nach. Unter dem Arbeitsbegriff Image wird das Vorhandensein von Vorstellungen über die Stadt aus der Sicht der Interessenlagen der Kommunalpolitik, der Wirtschaftsförderung und der Medien diskutiert. Stadt-Images sind meist als Attraktivitätsangebote eines nach außen hin wirksamen Stadtbildes wirksam. Demgegenüber behandelt der zweite thematische Abschnitt dieser Untersuchung lokal generierte „Vorstellungsbilder“ bestimmter sozialer Gruppen über ihre Stadt, die hier mit dem Arbeitsbegriff des Imaginären kontextualisiert werden. Der Fokus liegt auf kognitiven und affektiven Vorstellungen, die in der Bevölkerung in unterschiedlicher Weise vorhanden sind. Damit sind konkrete lokale Aneignungsformen des städtischen Raumes gemeint, der symbolisch-affektiv und habituell sichtbar angeeignet wird. Diese Dissertation versucht eine mehrdimensionale Interpretation pluralistischer Raumentwicklungen in der Stadt Havanna. Das Verhältnis von Image und dem Imaginären wird durch eine dritte interpretative Ebene über den Begriff der Textur (nach Lindner 2008) verbunden. Alle drei Ebenen sind perzeptiv wahrnehmbar und werden entlang meiner empirischen Untersuchung im Rahmen eines symbolisch repräsentativen Ansatz einer historisch-kulturellen Stadtanalyse in einem dritten Teil der Dissertation bearbeitet.

The metaphorical charging of the city with meaning and identity has been assuming an increasingly important place in contemporary cultural analyses of urban research. The question is to what extent the multiple connections that have been established between a city and its sence contribute to analytical insights into the historical functioning of the city, its perception, and the construction of its identity. This urban anthropological study of Havana addresses this question with respect to three different aspects: (1) the image of the city, (2) the imagining of the city, and (3) the memory of the city. In the first section of this dissertation I trace the processes in the most recently staged production of Cuba’s image, since 1991. Under the working concept „image“ I will discuss the presentation of the city according to the interests of community politics, the furtherance of the economy, and the advancement of the media. For the most part, the images of the city used to promote its attractions outside also affect the way it is “seen” from within. The second section, on the other hand, treats „images“ of the city locally generated by certain social groups, which are contextualized here under the working concept of „the imagined.“ I focus on cognitive and affective images which exist in differing ways among the population, by which I mean the concrete local forms in which urban space is appropriated in symbolic, affective and-although sometimes only from habit and memory - visible ways. This dissertation is an attempt at a multi-dimensional interpretation of pluralistic spatial developments in the city of Havana. Image and the imaginary are linked on a third interpretive level through the concept of „texture“ (following Lindner 2008). All three levels are readily perceptible and I work with them throughout my empirical study, in the framework of a symbolic, representational approach to the culture-historical analysis of a city, in a third part of the dissertation.
