Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich den Themen Qualitätsverständnis beim Konferenzdolmetschen und Rollenauffassungen von KonferenzdolmetscherInnen. In ihrem Rahmen wurde eine Befragung unter polnischen KonferenzdolmetscherInnen, den Mitgliedern der zwei größten Berufsverbände für ÜbersetzerInnen und DolmetscherInnen in Polen, durchgeführt. Die Befragung verfolgt das Ziel, herauszufinden, wie polnische KonferenzdolmetscherInnen zur Qualität ihres Berufes stehen und wie sie ihre eigene Rolle betrachten.
Im Rahmen der theoretischen Einführung in das Grundlagenthema Qualität beim Konferenzdolmetschen werden insbesondere qualitätsbeeinflussende Faktoren und potentielle BewerterInnen diskutiert. Auf einen Überblick über Qualitätskriterien in der Literatur folgt eine kurze Präsentation des aktuellen Forschungstandes. Die Grundlagen zum Thema Rollenauffassung werden anhand einer soziologischen Begriffsdefinition eingeleitet. Anschließend wird ein Überblick über Rollenbilder von KonferenzdolmetscherInnen in der Literatur gegeben und der Forschungsstand zur Rolle von KonferenzdolmetscherInnen kurz dargestellt.
Ein umfassender Methodiküberblick widmet sich den Studien von Zwischenberger/Pöchhacker, Bühler, Angelelli und Chiaro/Nocella. Die Methodik und Durchführung der polnischen Studie wird anhand von Beschreibungen der Stichprobe, der Erstellung des Instruments und seiner Verteilung detailliert behandelt.
Im Zuge der Auswertung werden zunächst die Ergebnisse zum Qualitätsverständnis analysiert, insbesondere im Hinblick auf den soziodemographischen Hintergrund der Befragten unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Ausbildung, Berufserfahrung und Mitgliedschaft in Berufsverbänden. Anschließend wird die Rollenauffassung von KonferenzdolmetscherInnen in Polen beleuchtet. Schwerpunkte der Analyse sind ihr Selbstbild und die Bedeutung ihrer Arbeit sowie vier Hauptmerkmale der Arbeit als KonferenzdolmetscherInnen (Aktivität, Sichtbarkeit, Neutralität und Kulturvermittlung). Im darauffolgenden Kapitel werden die Kommentare der Befragten zur Studie dargestellt.
Im vorletzten Kapitel werden die wichtigsten Schlussfolgerungen der Studie zusammengefasst und diskutiert. Abschließend werden die Kapitel der Arbeit noch einmal kurz beschrieben.

This paper presents and discusses the results of an empirical study on the perception of quality in conference interpreting and the role of conference interpreters carried out among members of the two largest and most important associations of translators and interpreters in Poland: Stowarzyszenie Tłumaczy Polskich and Bałtyckie Stowarzyszenie Tłumaczy. It forms part of a more comprehensive project on quality in simultaneous interpreting led by Franz Pöchhacker at the University of Vienna. The aim of the Polish web-based survey is to give a voice to the profession, since unlike the user perspective, the view from the professionals (especially those who are not affiliated with AIIC) has been left largely unexplored. In this way the empirical study should contribute to a fuller picture of quality and role perception from the professionals’ point of view, in general, and the Polish interpreting community, in particular.
First, the two main theoretical concepts of the study – quality in interpreting and the role of interpreters – are presented. In regard to the notion of quality, the attempt is undertaken to define what quality in interpreting means, what factors influence it and who should assess it, and how. Then the most important quality criteria are discussed. Finally, the current state of research in the field of quality in conference interpreting is presented. In regard to the second key concept, the role of conference interpreters, first the notion of role, in general, is defined. Then the focus is set on the role of conference interpreters, in particular. The most common metaphors, descriptions and definitions of conference interpreters by other people as well as their own self-representations are given. Finally, the current state of research on the role of conference interpreters is presented.
After the theoretical introduction the focus is set on the methodology of the Polish study. In this part of the study every stage of the process of carrying out the Polish survey is described in detail. First, works which served as its basis – papers by Zwischenberger/Pöchhacker (2010), Bühler (1986), Angelelli (2004) and Chiaro/Nocella (2001) – are presented. Then the sample, questionnaire as well as the process of administration (including the dry-run) are described. The presentation of the results begins with the findings for the relative importance of quality criteria in conference interpreting. The data in regard to this issue are analyzed in two different ways, first in general, and then in relation to three background variables of the participants: formal education, work experience and length of membership in professional associations. Next, the focus shifts to the respondents’ perception of their role as conference interpreters. In this part of the study attention is paid to the self-representation of the participants, the importance of their work for successful communication and four main aspects of their work (sense of agency, visibility, neutrality and intercultural mediation). Then the comments made by the study participants in regard to the survey are discussed.
In the last two chapters the most important conclusions of the study are summarized and discussed.
