Abstract
(Englisch)
To the backdrop of Austrian history between 1848 and 1916, the present doctoral thesis seeks to portray and thoroughly analyze the organizational, socio-political and historical structure of the Viennese Court during the reign of Emperor Franz-Joseph. The work shall fill a gap in historical studies of Austrian royal courts. Pursuing the above aim, the analysis generally follows the general political developments of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the defined period. Thus, following a short introduction into the basics features of Habsburgian courts, a first section is devoted to describing the fundamental reforms following the inauguration of Franz Joseph in 1848 until the constitutional project of the 1860s. A second section analyzes the developments related to the military defeats suffered and internal constraints born by the monarchy as of 1866. Apart from a basic ethical consensus owing to the personal preferences of the emperor himself, it becomes apparent that extent and characteristics of changes and reforms in the different phases depended decisively upon the personality of the “Obersthofmeister”, the supreme aristocrat in charge, external constraints – such as chronical lack of financing – always playing an important role of course. Ample space is dedicated to the evident parallelism between a reform of the general public administration and the internal organisation of the court which by 1916 lead to the absorption of the old society of the court by the general administrative state of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It is thus revealed how the personal status of court employees transformed from mere subordinates in the household of the monarch to constitutionally recognized and privileged public servants.
