Diese Magisterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der österreichisch-legitimistischen Exilzeitschrift „The Voice of Austria“, welche von Juni 1941 bis Juni 1943 in New York City und kurzzeitig auch im kanadischen Toronto, im Auftrag Otto von Habsburgs in
englischer Sprache veröffentlich wurde. Ziel der Arbeit ist es formale und inhaltliche Aspekte dieses Exilblattes zu erforschen. Dazu zählen die Funktion, die Ziele, die Zielgruppe, der Servicecharakter und der Verbreitungsgrad der „Voice ofAustria“. Im Detail soll den Fragen nach gegangen werden, wie Hitler und die Nationalsozialisten dargestellt wurden und inwiefern der österreichische Opfermythos propagiert wurde. Welche Lösungsansätze für ein künftiges Österreich standen zu Diskussion? Wie wurden die österreichische Bevölkerung und ein möglicher Widerstand in der „Voice“ dargestellt? Eine weitere zentrale Forschungsfrage soll sich mit der „The Voice of Austria“ als System beschäftigen. Als theoretischer Bezugsrahmen soll hierfür die Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns dienen. Handelte es sich bei Exilzeitschriften um ein abgrenzbares, in sich gekehrtes System, welches hauptsächlich über das Heimatland Österreich schrieb? Oder hat die „The Voice of Austria“ auch lokale Themen, Themen des amerikanischen Exillandes, aufgegriffen? Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfragen wurde die qualitative Inhaltsanalyse als zentrale Methode gewählt, da so ein relativ
offener Zugang möglich ist und dies bei einem noch unerforschten
Forschungsgegenstand sinnvoll erscheint. Dazu soll ein Kategoriensystem induktiv, also direkt am Material, entwickelt werden um so auf den spezifischen Inhalt besser eingehen zu können.

This master thesis deals with the legitimistic Austrian exile newspaper „The Voice of Austria“, which was published between June 1941 and June 1943 in New York City and for a short period also in the Canadian Toronto, on behalf of Otto of Austria. The aim of the thesis is to explore form and content of this newspaper. This includes functions, aims, target audience, service character and the diffusion rate. Questions about the portrayal of Hitler and the National Socialists as well as to what extent Austria’s “victim myth” was propagated are going to be answered. Further questions are: Which solutions for a future Austria were offered by the “Voice”? How were
Austria’s population and a possible resistance portrayed? Furthermore the question about “The Voice of Austria” as an isolated system will be explored. The theoretical frame of reference for this question will be the system theory by Niklas Luhmann. Was the exile newspaper a closed, delimited system, which only dealt with the native country? Or did it also deal with local issues, issues of the United States? To answer these questions the qualitative content analysis was chosen as the central method of, because it grants a relatively open approach, which makes sense in regard to the fairly unexplored object of research. For that purpose an inductive category system will be
developed in order to address the specific content of the newspaper.
