In dieser Arbeit soll gezeigt werden, wie sich die „Buchstabenrechnung“ verändert hat und wie Variablen heute im Schulunterricht eingesetzt werden.
Im ersten Kapitel „Die Einführung der Variablen – der historische Überblick“ zeige ich anhand der geschichtlichen Veränderungen, wie wichtig die Einführung der Variablen in der Mathematik ist. Besonderes Augenmerk richte ich dabei auf Francois Viète, da er Wegbereiter des heutigen algebraische Systems ist.
Im zweiten Kapitel zeige ich anhand von vier Schulbuchreihen, wobei ich mich auf die fünfte bis siebente Schulstufe beschränke, wie die Variablen heute eingesetzt werden und welche Erklärungen diesbezüglich auftreten.
Abschließend vergleiche ich nicht nur die Schulbücher untereinander, sondern möchte auch die Veränderungen seit dem ersten Auftreten der Variablen aufzeigen.

In the following diploma thesis the so called Algebra and its transformation should be explained. In addition to the first part, the focus will be set on the explanation of functions of variables in school instructions.
In the first chapter „The Introduction of Variables - a historical Perspective“, I want to point out the historical changes and the importance of variables in the science of mathematics. Especially the work and theories of the mathematician Francois Viète, who was the pathfinder of the modern view of the algebraic systems, should be presented in detail.
In the second chapter I want to show with an ensemble of educational books - my focus will be on the fifth and seventh level of education - how the variables are established and explained in school instructions today.
Finally I am not only going to compare the educational books, I want to demonstrate the changes of the variables from the first appearance until now.
