Jedes Jahr zieht das Burning Man Festival mittlerweile mehr als 50 000 Teilnehmer in die Wüste Nevadas, Black Rock Desert, in welcher aus dem Nichts eine Stadt in der Wüste entsteht und nach Beendigung des Festivals beinahe genauso schnell wieder verschwin-det. Black Rock Desert, eine Stadt deren Leben erfüllt ist mit Themen Camps, interaktiven Kunstinstallationen, monumentalen Temple, hunderten spontanen und geplanten Perfor-mances und nicht zu letzte einer rituellen Verbrennung eines hölzernen Bildnis eines Mannes, dem Burning Man. Seit 1986 hat sich das Burning Man Festival von einer spon-tanen Zusammenkunft und rituellen Lagerfeuer zu einem kulturellen Phänomen entwi-ckelt, wo Ritual, Kunst und Performance zusammentreffen und so eine Gemeinschaft bilden. Burning Man bietet einen Spielplatz wo Ritual, Festival und Performance kollidieren und die Teilnehmer somit ihre Welt kreieren und neu bestimmen können.
In dieser Arbeit soll dargestellt werden wie beim Burning Man Festival mit Ritual und Per-formance gespielt wird. Wie die sakralen Elemente auf das Weltliche einwirken und alltäg-liches Leben in Ritual verwandelt wird und somit die Grenzen zwischen Sakralem und Profanen verschwimmen. In diesem Kontext wird Black Rock City als ein Ort betrachtet, der seine Bewohner animiert tiefe Gefühle und Emotionen frei zulassen, sich eingebettet in einer Gemeinschaft zu fühlen, die vorgegeben alltägliche Welt durch Performance, Pa-rodie und Kunst zu hinterfragen und somit einen individuelle und gemeinschaftliche Trans-formation zu erleben.

Every Year more than 50 000 people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert and partici-pate in the weeklong event, the Burning Man Festival. For seven days they move into the harsh desert, bringing what they need to survive and create a city, which arises out of nothing and vanishes as quickly as it arose. Black Rock City, a “second world” which is filled with theme camps, interactive art installations, monumental temples, hundreds of spontaneous and rehearsed performances and last but not least the climatic burning of a wooden effigy of a man, the Burning Man. Since 1986, the Burning Man Festival evolved from a spontaneous gathering and ritual bonfire into a cultural phenomenon, where ritual, art and performance converge and evoke a sense of community. Burning Man offers a playground where ritual, festival and performance collide and the participants can choose to make and remake their worlds.
This master thesis is dedicated to portray how ritual and performance converge and are transformed in Black Rock City. How sacred element impacts on the secular and everyday life is turned into ritual and therefore blurring the boundaries between sacred and profane. In this context, Black Rock City is considered a place, where the inhabitants are offered a way to set free deep emotions and feelings, feel bonded to a community, to question the default world through performance, parody and art, hence to experience both individual and collective transformation.
