Diese Diplomarbeit beschreibt die wichtigsten Charakteristika von Fantasy Literatur und streicht dabei besonders die Wichtigkeit des Spirituellen oder Übernatürlichen als die treibende Kraft in der Gestaltung von Charakteren und Handlung heraus. Im Gegensatz zu dieser Tradition ist Philip Pullmans „His Dark Materials“ eine Neuheit, weil das Materielle eine bedeutendere Rolle spielt als das Spirituelle oder Übernatürliche. Die zentrale Frage dieser Diplomarbeit ist, wie Fantasy Literatur religiöse, und genauer gesagt, christliche Elemente behandelt, wobei traditionelle christliche Fantasy mit Pullmans Trilogie verglichen wird.

This thesis describes the main traits of the literary genre fantasy, emphasizing the prime importance of the spiritual or supernatural as the driving force in the shaping of fantasy characters and plot. In contrast to this tradition, "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman is a novelty because it stresses the material as more important than the spiritual or supernatural. Comparing traditional fantasy and His Dark Materials, the main focus of this thesis is in what ways fantasy deals with religious and more precisely Christian elements.
