Ausgehend von meiner mittlerweile 14- jährigen Erfahrung als Flugbegleiterin bei Austrian Airlines, sowie dem Studium der Kultur und Sozialanthropologie und Ethnologie galt der Forschungsinhalt der Interkulturellen Kommunikation an Bord eines Flugzeuges. Die Flugzeugkabine stellt für die Reisedauer eine kulturelle Begegnungsstätte dar, die nicht verlassen werden kann, räumlich begrenzt bis teilweise beengend ist und in welcher soziale Herkunft, Rang und Ansehen nicht mehr die Bedeutung wie in den Herkunftsländern haben.
Mittels qualitativer und quantitativer Methoden werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit die wesentlichen, praxisorientierten Themen zu kulturellen Überschneidungssituationen an Bord untersucht.
Insbesondere betrifft das die Interkulturalität an Bord eines Flugzeuges und deren Beeinflussung auf die Kommunikation und Interaktion der Reisenden.
Es wird die Möglichkeit eines „Kulturschocks“ näher beleuchtet und wie sich dieser in der Flugpraxis manifestieren kann.
Ebenso wird die Problematik erörtert, ob es möglich ist, dass durch zu geringes Wissen und mangelndem Verständnis gegenüber fremder Kulturen, es zu schematisierten Denkweisen und damit zu Stereotypisierung kommt und auf Grund der ethnozentrischen Grundeinstellungen der Reisenden, aber auch der FlugbegleiterInnen, es zu Vorurteilen kommen kann.
Die in der vorliegenden Arbeit behandelten Inhalte wurden schwerpunktmäßig aus dem Blickwinkel der FlugbegleiterInnen betrachtet.

The contents of my research applies to the intercultural communication on board of an aeroplane and is based on my 14 years of experience as a flight attendant with Austrian Airlines and my studies of cultural and social anthropology and ethnology.
The aeroplane cabin represents a place of cultural encounter for the length of the trip, which can’t be exited, is limited to confined in space and where social origins, ranks and standings don’t have the same meaning anymore compared to the country of origin.
The main and practice-orientated topics in regards to cultural overlapping situations on board will be presented in this submitted work via methods in quality and quantity. That specifically applies to the intercultural situation on board of an aeroplane and consequent influence on communication and interaction between passengers.
The possibility of a ’culture shock’ and how it could manifest itself within the air traffic practice will be highlighted.
I will be discussing the problematic nature of the theory that a missing understanding and experience in general for foreign cultures can lead to a systematic judgement and therefore a stereo standardization; as well as the tendency to lead to prejudices of passengers and flight attendants caused by ethnocentric attitudes of both parties.
The submitted contents in this work is mainly emphasised from a flight attendants point of view.
