Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
In 1738 the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI ordered an Azione teatrale from the imperial court poet Pietro Metastasio on the occasion of the name day of his daughter, Archduchess Maria Theresia. This piece, La pace fra la virtù e la bellezza was then performed at court with music by Luca Antonio Predieri. In the Musiksammlung of the Austrian Nationalbibliothek in Vienna exists another musical score that sets this libretto to music and was written by Antonio Bioni. The manuscript is dated 1739 and is therefore Bionis last sign of life, but nothing is known about the performance itself, except from what is written in his dedication on fol. 2r of the score: he says that the Serenata was sung by “noble people” of the city on the occasion of Maria Theresia’s name day and the manuscript was submitted as presentation copy. In the first part of this thesis the topics “ceremony of court feasts in the epoch of Charles VI.” and “the contemporary poetics of the serenata genre” are examined. Then the libretto is analysed to lay open actual discourses of the time as well as mechanism of homage and political actuality, that lie beneath the surface. The next part is about the circumstances of both performances, and also the unusual fact of a reproduction of the same libretto for the same dedicatee is considered, as are the identities of the singers involved. Especially the “noble” ladies that are named in Bionis score are interesting, because their last names refer to aristocratic families that had different functions at the imperial court. Due to that circumstance, Bionis composition of La pace fra la virtù e la bellezza is a rare document about the musical and cultural activities of this Viennese social class. The last chapter of this thesis is mainly about Bionis music, because there is no musical analysis of this piece yet; Predieri’s setting is considered in comparison. In particular the examination of the singers’ voices in Bionis music are of note, because it shows that this composer wrote for lay singers, whereas Predieris piece was performed by the imperial court chapel, a fact which influenced the musical stylistics of both composers. The appendix provides the serenata’s libretto and an edition of Bioni’s three allegorical arias.
