Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The idea for the thesis was developed as a result of the increasing attention surrounding the Internet and videos on the web. Webisodes are a new phenomenon of the World Wide Web and have only been in existence for a few years. Due to a lack of literature about webisodes, the following different approaches were utilized in order to gain an overview of the structure and content of webisodes. In order to analyse web series, TV series helped to create a first approach comparison, mainly for dramaturgy and narration. Furthermore, an introduction of the Internet and its moving images gave a perfect second step into the area of webisodes. The focus of the thesis lied on interactivity, which is the main element of a webisode and the third step in the thesis to get a better picture of webisodes. After a precise analysis of the TV series, an insight of the Internet and interactivity, the thesis concentrated on the web series regarding the background. Starting with all categories of webisodes the thesis continued to analyse the narration and dramaturgy of the web series, particularly, the moderated web series, which dealt with authorship, the interactive potential of a webisode and the role of social networks. The webisode is considered a communication tool and is defined by elements of interactive storytelling, fan culture and participation. To complete the overview of the phenomenon of the web series different channels of distribution, such as video portals, web series portals, social networks and unique websites have been described. At the end of the thesis the aesthetics and reception of the web series were clarified and the financial aspect showed if the web series is capable of surviving or even capable of replacing the TV series.
