Abstract
(Englisch)
This master's thesis aims at investigating how urban agriculture can provide solutions to sustainability
issues with industrial or conventional agriculture, whether an entrepreneurial approach is necessary for
proliferating the practice and what the advantages of organic urban agriculture are. The research is
largely based on a background of the food system, and what the benefits of urban agriculture can
provide to both those living in the city and those living in suburban or rural areas. Research was
conducted in Madrid and Copenhagen and is based on practical applications of urban agricultural. Case
studies sought to answer the aforementioned research questions by examining how urban agriculture
can operate within various urban and procedural contexts.
I suggest that entrepreneurialism is important to proliferate urban agriculture, and that the
practice of localizing food production can contribute to bolstering its sustainability on social, ecological
and economic terms and that urban agriculture is an effective way to reduce the negative effects of
industrialized agriculture and the centralized food system.
