Die Ukraine hat besonders durch die „Orangene Revolution― Ende 2004 an Aufmerksamkeit in der europäischen Öffentlichkeit gewonnen. Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit den Auswirkungen der Demokratisierungspolitik der Europäischen Union auf das politische System der Ukraine und setzt den Einfluss der Europäischen Union auf die Ukraine in Verbindung zu den tatsächlichen Fortschritten im Transformations- und Demokratisierungsprozess des Landes.
Der Autor folgt dabei den beiden wesentlichen Forschungsfragen, inwiefern die Europäische Union durch ihre Maßnahmen einen messbaren Einfluss auf die Demokratisierungsvorgänge in der Ukraine ausgeübt hat und welche Motivationen diesen Demokratisierungsbestrebungen zugrunde liegen. Er kommt zu dem deutlichen Ergebnis, dass die Europäische Union im Rahmen ihrer Nachbarschaftspolitik nur dann erfolgreich auf die Transformations-länder einwirken kann, wenn ihre Anreize attraktiv genug sind, um für das Empfängerland dadurch interessant zu bleiben. In Bezug auf die neuen Mitgliedsstaaten der Europäischen Union hat sich dieses System durchaus als wirkungsvoll erwiesen, bei der Ukraine ist allerdings vor allem die fehlende Beitrittsperspektive zur Europäischen Union ein Hauptgrund für die eher mäßige Akzeptanz der Demokratisierungsmaßnahmen. Aber auch die Europäische Union selbst sieht nicht immer die Demokratisierung als ihre wichtigste Förderperspektive.
Die Arbeit analysiert sowohl die Auswirkungen der ukrainischen Ost-West-Spaltung auf den Demokratisierungsprozess, als auch die geostrategische Herausforderung, die das zweitgrößte Land Europas für den Westen einerseits und für Russland andererseits darstellt. Dabei wird die demokratische Konsolidierung der Ukraine aus theoretischer, sowie realpolitischer Sicht dokumentiert und die Verbindungen zur Europäischen Union durch den Autor beleuchtet.

Ukraine has gained attention in the European public especially by the "Orange Revolution" in late 2004. The present work deals with the effects of democratization policy in the European Union on the political system of Ukraine and with the influence of the European Union to the Ukraine in connection with the actual progress in the transformation and democratization of the country.
The author follows the two main research questions to what extent the European Union has had, through their actions a measurable impact on the democratization processes in Ukraine and the motivations underlying these democratization efforts. He comes to the clear conclusion that the European Union in its neighborhood policy will only successfully affect the transition countries, if their incentives are attractive enough for the recipient country. In relation to the new Member States of the European Union, this system has proved quite as effective. In Ukraine, mainly the lack of joining the European Union is a major reason for the rather modest acceptance of democratization measures. However, the European Union itself does not always see democratization as their main funding perspective.
The paper analyzes both: the impact of Ukraine's east-west divide in the democratic process, as well as the geo-strategic challenge for the West on the one hand and Russia on the other. The author brightens the democratic consolidation of Ukraine from a theoretical and real political perspective and examines the documented links with the European Union.
