Zwischen Space und Place. Street-Art und Place-Making im städtischen Raum Krasnodars
Diese Arbeit hat Street-Art in Bezug auf Raum (space) und Ort (place) in Krasnodar (Südrussland) zum Thema. Die Intention dieser Arbeit ist es zu erforschen und zu untersuchen, auf welche Art und Weise Raum von Jugendlichen produziert und angeeignet wird und allgemeiner städtischer Raum zum signifikanten individualisierten Ort transformiert wird. Der Schwerpunkt liegt nicht auf den ästhetischen Aspekten der Street-Art, sondern auf den räumlichen und sozialen Kontexten, in welchen Street-Art produziert wird. Street-Art umfasst völlig neue Handlungsmuster in postsowjetischen städtischen Räumen: individuelle Handlungen und Wille zur Mitgestaltung städtischer Räume sowie Rede- und Meinungsfreiheit.
Die Feldforschung wurde während zwei längeren Aufenthalten in Krasnodar durchgeführt, wo ich viel Zeit mit jungen Street-Art-Künstlern verbrachte, den Jugendlichen auf ihren Wegen durch die Stadt folgte und jene Orte kennenlernte, die sie durch Street-Art-Praktiken individualisiert hatten. Die Forschung erlaubte tiefgründige Einblicke in die Intentionen und Motivationen für Street-Art-Handlungen sowie Interaktionen mit der städtischen Umgebung.
Street-Art findet im urbanen Raum statt, welcher in dieser Arbeit als alltägliche städtische Landschaft (Tim Ingold) betrachtet wurde. Die alltägliche Landschaft stellt eine Ebene zwischen dem vermehrt abstrakten Raum und dem bedeutungsvollen individualisierten Ort dar. Urbane Landschaft, Raum und Ort beeinflussen sich gegenseitig und sind prozessual. Mittels der Theorien Henri Lefebvres wird gezeigt, wie Individuen und Gesellschaften durch Handlungen Raum produzieren. Dass der lebendige Körper eine signifikante Rolle im Prozess der Produktion des Raums spielt, wird mit den Theorien Lefebvres, Setha Lows/Denise Lawrence-Zúñigas gezeigt, letztere bezeichnen dies als embodied space. Orte (places) werden von Individuen und ihren Handlungen beeinflusst und sind multipel und vielschichtig, was vor allem anhand theoretischer Konzepte von Margaret Rodman und Doreen Massey gezeigt wird. Der konfliktive Charakter des Ortes wird mit Konzepten von Setha Low und Gary McDonogh herausgearbeitet. Lefebvres Konzepte der Repräsentation des Raums (Konzeptualisierung und Planung) und die Räume der Repräsentation (der gelebte Alltagsraum) werden verwendet, um zu analysieren, wie sowjetische sowie aktuelle Konzeptionen jene Rahmenbedingungen in Alltagsräumen schaffen, die junge Street-Art-KünstlerInnen und ihre Raumaneignungs-praktiken beeinflussen.
Diese Arbeit trägt den Titel „Zwischen Space und Place“ weil sich die Jugendlichen zwischen diesen beiden Dimensionen bewegen. Sie versuchen, sich Teile des städtischen Raums anzueignen, welcher physisch und ideologisch von der Stadtverwaltung kontrolliert und überwacht wird. Die Jugendlichen kämpfen um das Recht sich Orte (places) anzueignen sowie mit ihren persönlichen Ideen und Aktivitäten im Zentrum Krasnodars präsent zu sein. Weiters betont der Titel „Zwischen Space und Place“ den Prozess der Transformation vom abstrakten Raum zum individualisierten Ort. Mehrere Forschungsbeispiele veranschaulichen diese Place-Making-Prozesse und zeigen, dass diese Praktiken nicht nur das physische Erscheinungsbild städtischer Oberflächen verändern, sondern vielleicht auch Anstoß für einen Diskurs darüber geben werden, wie die Zukunft urbaner Räume und Gesellschaft konzipiert und beschaffen sein wird.

Between space and place: street art and place making in the urban space of Krasnodar
This thesis is about street art regarding space and place in Krasnodar, southern Russia. The intention of this work is to research and analyze the way space is being produced and appropriated by young people and how general urban space becomes a significant place through relevant place making processes. The focal point are not aesthetic features of street art, but spatial and social contexts, in which street art is being produced. Street art activities comprehend completely new activity patterns in post-soviet urban spaces: individual action and participation as well as the freedom of speech and opinion.
Fieldwork was carried out during two long stays in Krasnodar, where I spent a lot of time among young street artists. I followed their paths through the city, seeing and experiencing their places that they have individualized through street art practices. The
research allowed deep insights into young people’s intentions, motivations, practices and ways of interaction with city surroundings.
Street art is taking place in urban space, which in this work is treated as urban landscape, which according to Tim Ingold, can be seen as an everyday living environment for city dwellers. This commonplace environment is considered as an entity between the mainly abstract and general space and the significant as well as individualized place. Urban landscape, space and place affect each other mutually and are undoubtedly process-related. With Henri Lefebvre’s theories it is argued how individuals and societies produce and create space through action. That the living body is a considerable part of the process of the production of space, is not only shown by Lefebvre, but also by Setha Low und Denise Lawrence-Zúñiga, who call this theoretical concept embodied space. Place is influenced by individuals and their actions moving through it, therefore place has a multiple character, which is shown in this work by Margaret Rodman and Doreen Massey. That place is full of conflict and a contested terrain, is argued with concepts by Setha Low and Gary McDonogh. Lefebvre’s theoretical concepts of the representations of space (the conceptualization and planning of space) and the representational space (the lived commonplace space of people) are used to analyze how Soviet as well as current concepts of space strongly influence drawbacks and opportunities of everyday spaces, where young street artists want to appropriate and individualize space.
This thesis is called “Between space and place” because young people are situated between these two dimensions. They try to appropriate parts of urban space that is controlled ideologically and physically by the municipality. Young street artists fight for their right to create personal places as well as to be present in the city center with their individual ideas and activities. Further the title “Between space and place” emphasizes the process of transformation from abstract space to individualized place. Several research examples demonstrate these place making processes and illustrate how young people take and make their own place in urban space and how these practices do not only change the physical appearance of walls but initiate a discourse about the future of urban space and society in the post-soviet city of Krasnodar.
