Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis deals with the new rules in Formula 1 and their impact on the television reception quality of Formula 1 fans. With regard to the new rules the focus is on the moveable rear wing DRS and the new tyres Pirelli. The primary objective of the rule changes in Formula 1 was the increase in the appeal of the races for the viewers. In this context we speak of mediatization. The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether the limits of mediatization with regard to the perceived reception quality of F1 viewers were not crossed. As far as the reception quality is concerned, the obtained and not obtained gratifications, the play elements of reception and the potential of the reception to induce the flow-experience in the viewer are of paramount interest. The theoretical framework of this thesis consists of the play-theory with the focus on the typical signs of play, which were elaborated on for example in the books from Johan Huizinga and Hans Scheuerl. The flow-experience was for the first time described by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and therefore his works constitute an absolutely pivotal part of the theoretical basis of this thesis. Furthermore, the Uses and Gratifications Approach (Katz, Blumler, Palmgreen) will be outlined. The primary goal of this thesis is to find out which elements of Formula 1 races are gratifying for the viewers and which not and which form should these elements assume so that they provide the optimal gratification for the recipients. For this purpose the aim was to develop two systems of categories which firstly represent the obtained and not obtained gratifications of recipients from Formula 1 races and secondly evaluate the success of the aforementioned new rules with regard to the gratifications. In addition to that, the impact of the new rules on the extent of play elements and the potential of the reception to induce flow in the recipient were investigated. Finally, the focus was also on the limits of entertainment with regard to Formula 1 reception. In this thesis a qualitative research method was used. Specifically, the method is a summarizing qualitative content analysis of the forum discussions on the autosport.com bulletin message board. A qualitative approach was chosen owing to the lack of theoretical knowledge in this specific research area. From the variety of qualitative research methods, the forum analysis was chosen due to its potential to generate new information quickly and relatively effortlessly. After the research was concluded, the applied method was evaluated positively, since it achieved its planned goals. It succeeded to generate extensive systems of categories with regard to the obtained/not obtained gratifications from the perspective of the new rules. As far as the impact of the new rules on the extent of play elements in the reception and the potential of the reception to induce flow in the recipients is concerned, the new rules had a mainly positive bearing, even though some negative effects of the new rules were found, too. With regard to the limits of entertainment of Formula 1, the result is interesting that the boundaries of optimal entertainment are very close to each other and the influence of the new rules was so significant that some aspects of the races moved completely from one side of the entertainment spectrum to the other. In conclusion it can be stated that this work can serve as a basis for further quantitative research which would investigate representative samples of Formula 1 fans that could not have been secured in this research.
