Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich mit den deskriptiven Kategorien Nord und Süd in der entwicklungspolitischen Inlandskommunikation auseinander. Es wird argumentiert, dass diese Kategorien ein prägendes Element entwicklungspolitischer Diskurse darstellen, obwohl sie aus wissenschaftskritischer Sicht keiner adäquaten Beschreibung einer komplexen globalen Situation entsprechen. Eine diskursive Trennung der Welt in einen nördlichen und einen südlichen Teil ist mit bestimmten stereotypen Formen von Identitätskonstruktionen verbunden, die historisch bedingte, verallgemeinernde und diskriminierende Kennzeichnungen aufweisen. Diese Art der Identitätskonstruktion fortzuführen widerspricht Zielen von Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und entwicklungspolitischer Inlandskommunikation, welche zu Verständnis, Respekt und globalem Chancenausgleich beitragen möchten.
Die wissenschaftliche Arbeit beleuchtet Aspekte von globalen Entwicklungsdiskursen und erläutert, ausgehend von einer kultur- und sozialanthropologischen Perspektive, die Problematik einer hegemonial konstruierten Nord-Süd-Dichotomie. Mittels eines empirischen Fallbeispiels zu entwicklungspolitischem Engagement hinsichtlich globaler textiler Güterketten soll dargelegt werden, dass globale Interdependenzen nicht auf zwei gegenüberliegende Positionen zu beschränken sind und für den Versuch ihrer Beschreibung mehrere Facetten der jeweiligen speziellen Situation oder Problemstellung beleuchtet werden müssen.

The goal of the scientific thesis at hand is to show that the terms North and South which are a distinct part of developmental discourses are by no means adequate to describe a global status quo. It is argued against their use, especially in a development related context, because of certain accompanying implications that concern the construction of identities coming along with it. To separate the world in two opposing entities along the historically originated lines of a rather symbolical than geographical comprehension of North and South means to carry on with stereotypical and discriminating forms of identity constructions that have been associating these categories since times long before development aid arose as a topic of global range. The aim of development efforts and development related communication is to create mutual understanding and respect for and between all kinds of people and life situations, an aim which would be undermined by the discursive continuation of categorical terms like North and South.
The thesis is looking at crucial formative aspects of global developmental discourses and argues along scientific insights that the discipline of social and cultural anthropology has made and offers in this respect. By highlighting some aspects based on empirical data of textile commodity chains and their relation to developmental activisms it is shown that matters of global scope are always multilayered and should not be broken down into a dichotomic positioning.
