Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This work deals with the local art of verse improvisation of Maracatu Rural singers in the northeast of Brazil. Maracatu Rural is the name of one of the many folguedos (folk plays) that are performed during the carnival of Pernambuco. The mestres (singers) are not the only attraction of this play and make up this interesting performance along with musicians (percussionists and wind instruments) and dancers, where singing and music is separated. At the moment there are four different contexts, where performance and singing occurs: From local ensaios (rehearsals) and sambadas (improvisation duels) that last over ten hours, to supra-regional apresentações (carnival presentations) and the concurso (competition) that last at the most 40 minutes. On the one hand, the latter contexts, organized by the carnaval of Pernambuco, are becoming more and more important because of the financial support they give to the Maracatu Rural groups. On the other hand, the traditionally celebrated feasts like the sambadas and the ensaios decline as contexts, because of the high costs involved. These external forces have strong influences on the art of improvisation, which is actually performed less, meanwhile the preparation of the verses has become more important and a possible option to face an increasingly unknown audience, to which the mestres try to represent an educated, peaceful and serious image of their folkplay. This work is investigated through a theoretical view, which considers the local perspectives of cultural producers in dealing with the cultural flow of meaning within a complex society, where the state, the market and forms of life are different actors in the construction and control of cultural meanings.
