In vorliegender Arbeit findet eine Verortung der Erzählweise des Dokumentarfilms The Call of the Wild statt. Um die narrative Struktur zu analysieren werden unterschiedliche Modelle und Theorien herangezogen, die sich mit Methoden des Erzählens beschäftigen.
Gérard Genettes Diskurs der Erzählung dient zur allgemeinen Festlegung des narrativen Aufbaus. Im Anschluss folgt eine Zuordnung von The Call of the Wild im dokumentarfilm-theoretischen Kontext. Direct Cinema und Cinéma Vérité stehen dabei in direktem Vergleich, wobei im Zuge dessen festgestellt wird, dass der Film im Stil des Cinéma Vérité gestaltet ist. Daraufhin ergibt eine Untersuchung der Modi Bill Nichols', dass The Call of the Wild als performativer Dokumentarfilm einzustufen ist. Im darauffolgenden Kapitel wird der Film anhand einer detaillierten Analyse von vier Szenen dem eigentlichen Spielfilmgenre Roadmovie zugeschrieben. Das letzte Modell, New Journalism, ist eine Form des Journalismus. Die grundsätzlich objektive Berichterstattung wird dabei bewusst durch subjektive Aspekte ergänzt. Eine Analyse hinsichtlich der wichtigsten Punkte des New Journalism ergibt, dass sich dieser spezielle Reportagestil in The Call of the Wild widerspiegelt.

This thesis is working out a characterization of the documentary The Call of the Wild. It is based upon the narrative structure of the documentary. Various models and theories which are dealing with different methods of narration are drawn up to analyse and utilize the narrative structure of the documentary.
Gérard Genettes work, Diskurs der Erzählung, is used to identify the general narrative structure. In addition The Call of the Wild is assigned within a documentary-film theoretical context. Direct Cinema and Cinéma Vérité are compared, and through this comparison it will be deducted that the film can be related to the narrative style of Cinéma Vérité. The next chapter discusses Bill Nichols’ modes of documentary with the conclusion that The Call of the Wild could be categorized as a performative documentary. The sections that follow make a detailed analysis of four specific scenes and discuss the possibility of the film having the narrative structure of the actual movie genre Roadmovie. The last model to be used is that of New Journalism. In this special form of journalism the generally objective reports get complemented through subjective aspects. Through the analysis of The Call of the Wild focusing on the most important features of New Journalisms, it is concluded that the documentary belongs to this specific reportage genre.
