Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Because every statement can have several meanings, communicative interpretations play a central role in social processes of understanding. Thereby a variety of factors are effective in communicative encoding and decoding processes (Maderthaner, 1989), which will be discussed in the present work. The special interest of the empirical study is given to influence factors of communicative interpretations in context of everyday situations in public. The communication model of Schulz von Thun (1981) provides a valuable contribution to applied communication analysis, which is why this model was used as a template of the questionnaire design. The participants should interpret communicative statements on the basis of verbal descriptions of “the four sides of an statement” in the sense of Schulz von Thun (1981). In the survey period from June to August 2011 a total of 235 persons attended the online questionnaire. Using factor analysis it could be shown that the constructed scenes of everyday life are represented by three levels: a level of relation-self-disclosure, a level of facts and a level of appeal. Regarding the interpretation of appeal aspects and relation-self-disclosure aspects gender effects could be observed. Via regression analysis could be shown that with increasing city size the perception of factual aspects increases, with increasing educational level the perception of relational and self-disclosure aspects decreases, and that low sociability is accompanied by increasing perception of appeal aspects.
