Nicht nur das institutionelle Theater, sondern auch andere kulturelle Phänomene – wie z.B. Feste – können unter den Aspekten der Inszenierung und Aufführung betrachtet werden. Mithilfe des Theatralitätskonzepts, das im deutschsprachigen Raum maßgeblich von Erika Fischer-Lichte beeinflusst wurde, können weite Teile unserer Lebenswelt auf ihren (Selbst-)Darstellungsgehalt analysiert werden. Ein zentraler Begriff im Theatralitätsdiskurs ist dabei jener der Aufführung. Sie ergibt sich aus dem Zusammenspiel von hervorgebrachten Handlungen und der Wahrnehmung durch die Zuschauer. Ihr geht eine Inszenierung voraus, sie ist also beabsichtigt.
In sogenannten cultural performances (kulturellen Aufführungen) stellt sich eine Gruppe von Menschen gegenüber sich selbst oder anderen dar. In ihnen vergegenwärtigt sich das Selbstverständnis einer Gemeinschaft auf besonders intensive Weise, denn sie liegen außerhalb des alltäglichen Wirklichkeitsbereiches. Eine Art theatrale Wirklichkeit, in der andere Regeln gelten, ein anderes Verhalten ausgeübt und anders wahrgenommen wird, entsteht.
Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich anhand der Festkultur eines konkreten Fallbeispiels mit der Selbstdarstellung eines gesamten Ortes: der Marktgemeinde Thaya im nördlichen Waldviertel. Drei ausgewählte Feste, die hier als cultural performances verstanden werden, wurden dahingehend analysiert, inwiefern sich Selbstdarstellungen nach innen und nach außen zeigen. Es geht um Fragen der Identität, Zugehörigkeit und des Images, denen am Beispiel des Bauernmarkts, des Sportlerfests und des Faschingsumzugs in Thaya nachgegangen wird. Das Fallbeispiel soll exemplarisch für verschiedene ländliche Räume in Österreich stehen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk der Arbeit liegt darauf, die Bedeutung und Funktion von Festen für das Selbstverständnis und die Identitätsbildung der Bewohner ländlicher Gegenden zu erkennen sowie generell theatrale Bezüge in einem Bereich außerhalb des Theaters aufzudecken.

The notions of staging and performance are not confined to the institutional theater. On the contrary they both apply equally to a variety of dissimilar cultural phenomena, such as celebrations for example. Using the concept of theatricality prevailing in the German-speaking world as defined by Erika Fisher-Lichte, broad parts of our environment can be analysed on the basis of the substance of self-performance. A central idea at the core of the discourse on theatricality is the one about performance. It appears in the interplay between induced actions and the spectator’s perception of them. Performance leads the way to a mise-en-scène in a sense that it is also deliberate. In so called cultural performances, groups of individuals represent themselves for themselves but also in relation to others. Within these, the self-understanding of a community is envisioned in a particularly intense manner, since they rest beyond the boundaries of everyday reality. A certain type of theatrical substantiality is generated, which pertains to different rules and is otherwise discerned as a different practised behavior.
This diploma thesis is concerned with festive culture and refers to the concrete case study of the self-performance of an entire place: the market town Thaya in the north Waldviertel. Three selected festive events, that are here acknowledged as cultural performances, will be to that effect analysed, in order to determine to what extent self-performances become apparent both inwardly and outwardly. The questions of identity, affiliation and image will be pursued, using the example of the farmer’s market, the sports event and the carnival in Thaya. The case study should stand exemplarily for various rural areas in Austria. A particular focus of the thesis rests on the signification and the function of festive events in the self-understanding and in the identity formation of inhabitants from rural regions as well as to unveil usually theatrical references in a range beyond and outside the theater.
