Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit den Themenbereichen der Visuellen Anthropologie, der Emotionen und der Fotografie, vor allem der Presse- und Kriegsfotografie und im Speziellen auch mit der World Press Photo Foundation. Diese zeichnet jährlich die besten Pressefotografien aus und präsentiert diese in Ausstellungen weltweit. Anhand der durchgeführten quantitativen Untersuchung bei der World Press Photo Ausstellung 2008 werden die Emotionen, welche Fotografien, vor allem jene emotionaler Art, auslösen können, herausgearbeitet. Außerdem wird die Motivation der Besucher, diese Ausstellung anzusehen, erörtert. Es wird jedoch nicht nur auf die Gefühle der Betrachter von Bildern eingegangen, sondern auch auf die der Fotografen. Des Weiteren werden die Vor- und Nachteile der Fotografie für Forschungen von Kultur- und Sozialanthropologen, sowie die Unterschiede zwischen der Pressefotografie und der ethnographischen Fotografie aufgezeigt. Ein weiteres Augenmerk dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Untersuchung der Beziehung zwischen Fotograf und Fotografierten und deren Reaktionen im Hinblick auf den kulturellen Aspekt.

The diploma thesis in hand is concerned with the topics of Visual Anthropology, emotions, press and war photography and the World Press Photo Foundation, that honours annually the best press photographs of the year and shows them in a worldwide exhibition. Based on the quantitative research, that had been accomplished in the World Press Photo exhibition of the year 2008, the following research focuses can be worked out: on the one hand the emotions that photographs, especially war photographs can arouse in the observer and on the other hand the reasons why people visit this exhibition and watch this sort of pictures. But not only the emotions and feelings of the observer, but also those of the photographer are important for this thesis. Furthermore it reveals the advantages and disadvantages of photography for the purpose of research in cultural and social anthropology as well as the differences between press photography and ethnographic photography. Additionally the relationship between the photographer and the ones who are being photographed and their reactions had been investigated in terms of cultural varieties.
