Nach der Veröffentlichung von Lewis Carrolls Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland im Jahr 1865 wurde das Werk einer Reihe von Interpretationen unterzogen – psychoanalytischer (Goldschmidt 1933), philosophischer (Holmes 1959), sprachwissenschaftlicher (Sutherland 1970), semiotischer (Nöth 1990), und pragmatischer (Lakoff 1993) Art. Auch diese Diplomarbeit nähert sich Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland von der pragmatischen Seite und erweitert Lakoffs Gedanken über die Sprache in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, die kein geregeltes und wertfreies Phänomen ist (siehe Lakoff 1993: 368). Die Diplomarbeit befasst sich mit zahlreichen ambiguen Referenzen, Wortspielen und absurden Aussagen, die im Rahmen von Deixis, Präsupposition und Implikatur analysiert werden. Anhand dieser drei pragmatischen Konzepte konzentriert sich die Diplomarbeit auf die Beziehung zwischen Wortwahl einerseits und kommunikativem Zweck des Sprechers, situativer Angemessenheit und Kontext andererseits. Die Rolle des letzteren führt durchgehend durch die ganze Diplomarbeit. Der Kontext ermöglicht dem Adressaten, auf die passende Referenz der deiktischen Ausdrücke zu schließen, hebt die pragmatische Präsupposition über ihre semantische Entsprechung, differenziert zwischen der expliziten und der impliziten Bedeutung und hilft, eine Konversationsimplikatur abzuleiten. Folgende pragmatische Kommunikationsprinzipien werden behandelt: das Kooperationsprinzip und seine Maximen, das Höflichkeitsprinzip, das Ironieprinzip und das Interessensprinzip. Der Zusammenhang dieser wird von der Arbeit in bestimmten Kontexten demonstriert. Beispiele für die Verletzung von Maximen und für unkooperative Kommunikation sind in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland zahlreich vorhanden. Solche Erscheinungen verursachen oft unsinnige Aussagen und eklatante Absurditäten, deren Bedeutung im ausschließlich semantischen Bereich unmöglich zu finden ist. Die Hauptaussagen dieser Diplomarbeit bestehen darin, dass Pragmatik wesentlich zur Analyse der erfolglosen Kommunikation zwischen Alice und den Bewohnern Wunderlands beiträgt und das Verständnis für den Carrollischen absurden Humor und Unsinn erleichtert.

Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, since its publication in 1865, has been subjected to a number of interpretations ― psychoanalytic (Goldschmidt 1933), philosophical (Holmes 1959), linguistic (Sutherland 1970), semiotic (Nöth 1990), and pragmatic (Lakoff 1993). This thesis also approaches Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland pragmatically and extends Lakoff’s ideas on its subversiveness in terms of language use. The thesis explores Carroll’s numerous ambiguous references, puns and preposterous statements and analyses them within the framework of three pragmatic concepts, viz. deixis, presupposition and implicature. Within the framework of these notions, the thesis concentrates on the relationship between the choice of language and the speaker’s purposes, situational appropriateness and context. The role of the latter is emphasized throughout the whole thesis. Context enables the addressee to assign a correct reference to deictic expressions, allows pragmatic presupposition to overrule its semantic counterpart, differentiates between explicitly stated and implicitly conveyed meaning, and helps infer a conversational implicature. The thesis deals with several pragmatic principles of communication, viz. Cooperative Principle and its maxims, Politeness Principle, Irony Principle and Interest Principle; it demonstrates their interrelationship in particular contexts. The Alice story abounds with examples of maxim flouting and instances of uncooperative communication. Such occurrences often lead to nonsensical statements and blatant absurdities, the meaning of which is impossible to find within the scope of pure semantics. The results of the thesis show that pragmatics can substantially contribute to explaining the reasons for communication failure between Alice and the dwellers of Wonderland; pragmatics facilitates the understanding of Carrollian absurd humour and nonsense.
