Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit ist es, die formulierten Zielsetzungen der Dachorganisation Special Olympics und des unterstehenden Vereines Special Olympics Österreich hervorzuheben und die Korrespondenz bezüglich der praktischen Umsetzung zu überprüfen.
Als Ergebnis der Literaturrecherche wurden die Aufgabenstellungen der Organisation herausgearbeitet. Special Olympics hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, durch das zur Verfügung stellen zahlreicher sportlicher Aktivitäten, Trainings und Wettkämpfe für Menschen mit geistiger Beeinträchtigung, die Integrationsmöglichkeiten zu verbessern und die Lebensqualität dieser Personengruppe durch die Förderung von sozialen Kontakten, der Gesundheit und der Entwicklung zu steigern. Mittels Leitfadeninterviews mit AthletInnen und deren Eltern werden genannte Zielsetzungen auf Praxisrelevanz überprüft und analysiert sowie Erweiterungs- bzw. Verbesserungsvorschläge des Klientels eingebracht.
Es stellt sich heraus, dass die Zielsetzungen der Organisation und die Umsetzung mittels diverser sportlicher Veranstaltungen mit der Praxis übereinstimmen und weitläufige, sehr positive Auswirkungen auf die AthletInnen und deren Umfeld haben. Sowohl dem Umfeld als auch den SportlerInnen wird durch die Organisation eine Plattform geboten, um Kontakte knüpfen zu können und sich auszutauschen. Das Gesundheitsbewusstsein und die körperliche Fitness der AthletInnen werden gesteigert und Entwicklungsfortschritte auf seelischer, geistiger und physischer Ebene sind zu verzeichnen. Das Gesamte der Umsetzung von genannten Teilaspekten wirkt sich eindeutig förderlich auf die gesellschaftliche Integration der AthletInnen aus.
Bemängelt wird von den ExpertInnen im Rahmen der Interviews die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Zu wenige Menschen wissen über das Angebot von Special Olympics Bescheid und können dieses auf Grund des Informationsmangels nicht nutzen. Die ausgesprochen tollen, sehr weitläufig einfluss- und wirkungsreichen Veranstaltungen dürfen niemandem vorenthalten werden. Die Organisation sollte
sich also für eine breitere Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und Informationsverbreitung einsetzen.

The aim of this thesis is to highlight the objectives set by the umbrella organization of the Special Olympics and Special Olympics Austria below the association and correspondence relating to review of practical implementation.
As a result of the literature, the tasks of the organization were worked out. Special Olympics has set a target by which provide numerous sporting activities, trainings and competitions for people with mental disabilities, to improve the integration possibilities and to enhancing the lives of this population through the promotion of social contacts, health and development. Using interviews with athletes and their parents called objectives are reviewed and analyzed to practice relevance and suggestions for improvement or expansion brought the clientele.
It turns out that match the objectives of the organization and implementation through various sporting events with the practice and have extensive and very positive impact on the athletes and their environment. Both the environment and the athletes are offered by organizing a platform to establish contacts and exchange ideas. The awareness of health and physical fitness of the athletes increased and progress in development of emotional, mental and physical levels recorded. The overall implementation of these aspects part has a clear beneficial effect on the social integration of the athletes.
They complain about the experts in the interviews of public relations. Too few people know about the Special Olympics this decision and can not use due to lack of information. The very great, very widely influential and effective rich events may be withheld from anyone. The organization should therefore be used for a broader public relations and information dissemination.
