Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis is an interdisciplinary survey at the nexus of American Studies and Media and Communication Studies. It is an attempt to answer the probably most debated question in the field of anti-Americanism, namely whether the phenomenon is caused by the actions of the USA or by an opposition to the nature of the USA. The question is explored by a systematic analysis of the literature on the topic, as well as a comparison of anti-Americanism in the Austrian media in the year 2007 and the year 2010. In order to include more subtle forms of anti-Americanism as well, the so-called framing approach served as the theoretical basis of the study.
In the theoretical part of the thesis the consistency of anti-Americanism and the recurrence of its patterns are illustrated by a discussion of the phenomenon’s historical dimension. The roots of anti-Americanism are also discussed, as well as key concepts of the framing approach. The empirical part is comprised of qualitative and quantitative content analyses. The sample includes 7738 articles from the magazines Profil, Falter and News. In the qualitative content analysis 7 new anti-American masterframes and 13 new anti-American subframes are identified. This analysis also yields 6 anti-American prejudices additionally to the 15 prejudices that were extracted from the literature before the analysis. Moreover, a new type of anti-Americanism was found, namely “oppositional anti-Americanism” and added to the seven types listed by Meunir (2007). Each of these newly generated types is illustrated by a prototypical example from the sample.
The results of the quantitative analyses include the comparison of 2007 and 2010 in terms of anti-American prejudice, types of anti-Americanism, anti-American frames, the objects and subjects of attribution, the topics and the editorial departments in which anti-Americanism occurs, as well as a comparison of the three analyzed papers. The major result of the empirical part is that anti-Americanism is no longer defined by the foreign affairs frame, but by the economic frame, therefore supporting the basic assumption that anti-Americanism is primarily an ideology and not a reaction to specific foreign policies.
