Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
My diploma thesis deals with the reception of the Bollywoodfilm Devdas (Indien 2002, Sanjay Leela Bhansali) in german speaking countries. The focus of my thesis consists of an analysis of reception interviews made in Vienna and a case study of Bollywood Fans on Internet. To this end, video clips created by fans are analyzed. In the first part, the paper deals with media reception in general and the Uses and Gratifications theory. After this I explain how media anthropology arose and how through the influence of the cultural studies the recipient was acknowledged as active producer of meanings. In a broader sense other theories are explained like the theory of the open work from Umberto Eco, the different reading types by Stuart Hall and the theory of intertextuality. Following there is an analysis of the film due to Faulstich and the evaluation of the interviews in the method of Schmidt. Important themes in the reception of the interviews are love followed by honour and the caste system. Afterwards I analyze particular examples of video clips Fans have posted on the internet. The videoclips deal with themes like love, hate, destiny, disputes and power. They convey emotions of the recipients like grief, happiness and blithesomeness. The purpose of this paper is to indicate that Fans are active and creative. The recipients are actively involved in defining the films significations. Fans are acting as media producers by consuming and decoding a media text and creating a new one. Overall reception of the Bollywoodfilm Devdas (Indien 2002, Sanjay Leela Bhansali) varies according to the viewers origin, age and gender.
