Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Today microfinance as well as other industries follows the trends towards globalization. Since The International Year of Microfinance 2005 microfinance goes to another direction and is no longer seen as a niche financial sector and a business opportunity for only non-profit and/or non-regulated microfinance institutions. More and more big international investors both private (who invest directly in microfinance) and commercial banks (scaling-down their business) are involved in microfinance. These big formalized and regulated microfinance institutions are seen at the right institution which can cover the huge demand on microfinance services for the poor. The right internationalization strategy is a crucial part in being sustainable and reaching self-sufficiency. We talk about inclusive financial systems and the right of all people to have access to financial resources.
The main topic of this thesis is the internationalization strategy of a for-profit microfinance bank. Microfinance and the approaches of institutionists and welfairists are explained. The different types of microfinance institutions focused on microfinance and commercial banks are shown. The model of Bartlett and Ghoshal as well as Perlmutter’s and Heenan’s EPRG model of internationalization strategy are discussed and an attention to market entry strategies is given. Two hypotheses are made regarding the role of strategic decisions and how they influence the microfinance institution’s success is examined. Within the case study of the ProCredit Group the author tried to find the link between internationalization strategy and the sustainability and self-sufficiency of a microfinance institution.
