Abstract
(Deutsch)
Der Leitfaden dieser Arbeit ist ein Zitat von Thompson: „sheer artlessness may bring a culture down but a civilization like that of the Yoruba, and the Yoruba-Americans, pulsing with ceaseless creativity richly stabilized by precision and control, will safeguard the passage of its people through the storms of time.”(Thompson, 1984, S. 97) Drei ausgewählte Künstler, Anthony Caronia, Joe Quesada und Leandro Soto, aus drei verschiedenen kulturellen Hintergründen bestätigen durch ihre Werke die Unendlichkeit und Wandlungsfähigkeit der Yoruba Religion.
Abstract
(Englisch)
Orishas 3.0 demonstrates the transformation ability of the Yoruba Religion in the Cuban and US Diaspora. The Yoruba suffered from a geographical uprooting due to the transatlantic slavery as well as several migration waves from Cubans to the US. Despite all this they could maintain their religious and cultural concepts. Thomp-son´s quote represents the guideline for this paper: “sheer artlessness may bring a culture down but a civilization like that of the Yoruba, and the Yoruba-Americans, pulsing with ceaseless creativity richly stabilized by precision and control, will safe-guard the passage of its people through the storms of time.”(Thompson, 1984, S. 97) The infinite and versatile aspects of the Yoruba religion are confirmed by the crea-tions of the three artists Anthony Caronia, Joe Quesada and Leandro Soto. The artists never lose sight of the basic elements of the Yoruba religion originated in Africa, when they look at the religion with their different cultural backgrounds and their diverse perspectives. The analogy of the tree is transferred to the three artists and consists of the African roots, the trunk of transformation and the branches stretching towards the unity of religion and genres of art. The case study of the Yoruba Orisha Baptist Church visualizes the perfect mix of Catholic, Kabbalistic, Muslim and Hindu Elements with those of the Yoruba religion. In the course of time religion changes, the Orishas change, but their roots maintain.
