Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The present study investigates trust in money under consideration of the euro crisis in 2010. Taking into account the results of Beurle (2010) the authors explore the changing of trust and attitudes toward the euro over the years. Dependent on an individual’s belief it leads to different assumption about a money actor’s competence, dispositions and contextual conditions, which may provide monetary stability. The respondent’s answers behavior referring the monetary knowledge items were used to analyze their beliefs and conceptions of money. By the means of our set of eleven items people's beliefs about our monetary system can be categorized into following groups: (1) those who correctly believe that our money is fiat-money and attribute the power of money creation to the banking system. It represents "the Keynesian-neoclassic" approach to money: 11% of the Viennese population (2) those who believe that we have a gold standard and that it is the economy which controls the value of money: It is represented by "The Austrian School" of commodity money: 9% of the Viennese population (3) those who belief in a strong and independent European central bank: 17% of the Viennese population. Therefore the Austrian economics can be described as free market abider, who ascribes the economy the main responsibility for the monetary stability. An opposite monetary approach can be shown for the Keynesian economics which have a strong conviction that the euro provides a stable currency. The results shows that individuals who beliefs in the work of the European central bank have a strong agreement to the euro as stable currency in the euro zone. Nevertheless the comparison of the results between the years reflects the development of the financial crisis which leads to a general loss of trust regarding the stability of the euro.
