Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die al-Mu'izz Street, das Herz des islamischen Kairo, und dessen Stellenwert seit der Gründung durch die Fatimiden bis in die heutige Zeit zu beschreiben. Es werden die wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen und religiösen Veränderungen über 1000 Jahre gezeigt und die Gründe welche zum Verfall der Straße führten, analysiert. Die Restaurierung durch das Historic Cairo Rehabilitation Projekt und die Transformation in ein „Open Air Museum“ machte die Lebensader der lokalen Bevölkerung für den Tourismus attraktiv. Die Annahme, dass der Tourismus in der al-Mu'izz Street die Lebensqualität der Bewohner verbesserte, hat sich genauso bestätigt wie Tatsache, dass der Tourismus mit ein Grund für sozio-kulturellen Veränderungen der traditionellen Altstadt ist.Die al-Mu'izz Street als kulturelles Erbe zu schützen ist eine nationale Pflicht um die kulturelle Identität zu erhalten, welche für die lokale Bevölkerung die Quelle des Tourismus darstellt.(vgl. Mortada 2012:2) Vor der Restaurierung kannte niemand die al-Mu'izz Street und heute spielt sie wieder wie in der mittelalterlichen Zeit eine entscheidende Rolle im Leben der Ägypter.(vgl. ebd.5)

The Aim of my work is, to describe the al-Mu'izz Street, the heart of the Islamic Cairo, and it´s value since the establishment by the Fatimid till today. It shows the economic, cultural and religious changes during a period of 1000 years and the mean reasons which are responsible for the deterioration of the Street. The restoration through the Historic Cairo Rehabilitation Project and the transformation into an „Open Air Museum“, made the street an attractive lifeline for the local people and an important location for the Tourism.
The assumption that the Tourism in the al-Mu'izz Street will improve the lifestyle has been proven as well as the Tourism is responsible for the social-cultural changes in the traditional historic district.
Protecting the al-Mu'izz Street as an cultural heritage is an national duty in order to keep it’s cultural identity, which is for the local people the source of Tourism. (vgl. Mortada 2012:2) Before the Restoration, the al-Mu'izz Street was unknown and today it plays an important role in the life of the Egyptian like it was in the medieval time. (vgl. ebd. 5)
