Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This paper classifies and determines, in both a cultural-theoretical and music-analytical fashion, the phenomenon of the grotesque in its manifestations in contemporary music theater. In line with current research and secondary literature, this project defines the grotesque as an interdependent, relational phenomenon that avoids clear characterization or demarcation in relation to other phenomena. To put it simply, the grotesque may be viewed as a principle of distortion and alienation that arises through the amalgamation of heterogeneous and disparate elements, by which it disappoints expectations and norms or mixes together fractured psychological and philosophical categories like angst, the uncanny, fantasticality, tragicomedy, farcicality and burlesque. Formally, the grotesque expresses itself through, among other things, contortion, obfuscation, excess and a playful as well as associative handling of moral, logical or physical laws. The complex relations that constitute the grotesque require first its theoretical delineation and then its material authentication. Thus, in the first section of the dissertation, the grotesque will be outlined as an abstract, theoretical structure, which in the second section, with the goal of demonstrating concrete characteristics, will be substantiated by means of selected music theater works from recent years. Here, with the aid of musicological and literary texts, a theoretical, historical and conceptual approach to the phenomenon will be unfurled, which will serve as the foundation for the description of the individual components of the grotesque and their relations to each other as structural correlatives. This procedure bases itself on the conjecture that the grotesque is a phenomenon that while variable in its concrete manifestation is entirely constant in its formal and functional qualities - this further points to its distinctive ability to be actualized and adapted, as well as the difficulty inherent in any attempt to pin it down. The grotesque has already been the subject of musicological research. However, it has remained limited, with few exceptions, to European Modernism. Therefore, the theoretical development of the structure of the grotesque, like its analytical application, serves the goal of establishing a systematical realization of the phenomenon of the grotesque in music. This is especially true for contemporary music theater, and thus, this study aims to work out concrete musical, dramaturgical and formal manifestations of the grotesque in select works of contemporary music theater. Such manifestations will be labeled ‘constructional coefficients of the grotesque’. Research will focus on seven music theater works from the last fifteen years. In addition, diverse forms of music theater which occupy a space between opera and the staged concert will be incorporated into the analysis. Research material will also include the grotesque as it appears in the music itself, e.g. instrumentation, melodic and harmonic relationships, rhythm, form, aesthetic, as well as the grotesque in the relationship between music and text. The analysis will proceed on three levels, in the context of: contemporary music theater at large, particular works (and the dramaturgy of the works) and the exact system of musical notation and its pertaining material. The confrontation of the theoretical structure with the results of the concrete analysis that forms the crux of this paper will contribute to the field of musicology by sharpening the currently vague outlines of the grotesque in contemporary music theater.
