This work is a monographic survey of the life and works of Justus Georg Schottelius,Baroque Germany’s foremost philologist, grammarian and metrician.
Born 1612 in Einbeck/Lower Saxony as son of a preacher, he studied at various German and Dutch universities while having to fend for his livelihood. Fleeing 1636
from the Swedish army from Wittenberg to Braunschweig, he worked there as a private tutor before being employed by the Duke August the Younger of
Wolfenbüttel-Brunswick 1638 as court tutor for his children. Schottelius was subsequently appointed to various important functionary positions at court, while
privately engaging himself in language, metric and philosophical studies. He soon edited his first books: 1641 his „Teutsche Sprachkunst“ and 1643 the „Teutsche
Vers- und Reimkunst“ as a member of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft under the name „Der Suchende“. Schottelius’ close friendship with G.Ph.Harsdörffer, Sigmund
von Birken and Johann Rist before and during his membership in the Pegnitz- Blumenorden in Nuremberg under the name of „Fontano“ is also mentioned, so are
the general living conditions during the Thirty Years’ War, and in particular those of academics and authors, dealt with in the first chapter of this work.
Further attention in this regard is given to Schottelius’ own linguistic and metric theories as well as his complaints about the pitiful state of the German language
during the Thirty Years’ War. According to him, the necessary restoration of German cultural and moral standards could only be achieved by the simultaneous restoration of the German language.
Considering the great efforts he kept putting into the development of the German language, it was the great success of his major work, the „Ausführliche Arbeit Von
der Teutschen HaubtSprache“ that made J.G.Schottelius’ name known throughout the world of German philology.
In closing my work, I take a look at research done on baroque style literature and poetry, beginning from the eighteenth century until today.
