Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Gründungsbau der Kartause Gaming in Niederösterreich. Das im 14. Jahrhundert von Herzog Albrecht II. gegründete
Kartäuserkloster wird anhand der erhaltenen Bausubstanz und der Schrift- und Bildquellen bezüglich der Gesamtanlage und der Ausstattung untersucht. Dem sind eine Beschreibung der
unterschiedlichen Bildquellen und der am Bau vorhanden mittelalterlichen Baureste vorangestellt. Dabei werden unter anderem die mittelalterlichen Planrisse, die
Architekturzeichnungen und die Glasscheiben im Stift St. Florian und der Franzensburg in Laxenburg bearbeitet.
Im Anschluss daran werden Albrecht II. und seine Motivation zur Gründung beleuchtet. Dies ist die Grundlage zur Interpretation der Nutzungsformen und Bedeutungen der Kartause.
Danach folgt anhand der Quellen eine Skizzierung des Gründungsbaus, bei dem auch ein spätgotischer Umbau im 15. Jahrhundert behandelt wird. Es hat sich dabei um eine größere Änderung in der architektonischen Substanz und der Ausstattung gehandelt. Es wurde eine Zwischendecke in die Kirche eingezogen, weshalb die gotische Decke des Gründungsbaus mit Teilen der Polychromierung heute noch erhalten ist. Die Gründung als Doppelkartause
bedingt, dass neben den 20 erhaltenen Kartäuserzellen noch weitere vier vorhanden gewesen sein müssen. Daher kann der heutige Bibliothekshof in dieser Form nicht bestanden haben.
Weiters konnte festgestellt werden, dass nicht ein Bereich der Anlage dem Herzog als Residenzbereich diente, sondern dass das Repräsentationsbedürfnis in der ganzen Anlage und
ihrer Ausstattung Erfüllung fand.
Die Vergleiche mit zeitnahen Gründungen der Habsburger, vor allem jenen der Brüder Albrechts II., die Kartause Mauerbach und die Zisterze Neuberg an der Mürz, sollen
aufzeigen, dass die Nutzung der Kartause auch in einem größeren Zusammenhang zu sehen ist. Dabei spielen aber nicht nur wirtschaftliche und politische Faktoren eine Rolle, sondern auch die Funktion der Gründungen als Gedächtnisstätten.

The objective of this thesis is to reprocess the current state of sources and research concerningthe structural foundation of the medieval charterhouse Gaming, situated in Lower The charterhouse was founded in the 14th century by duke Albrecht II of Habsburg. The building will be analysed by taking into consideration the structural fabric, the historical image sources such as plans, paintings and graphic representations, and documented written
sources, as well as the remaining medieval building structure, regarding the total construction and furnishing. This processing also includes the medieval outlines, the architectural drawings and the glass panes now being kept in St. Florian, Upper Austria, and in the Franzensburg in
Laxenburg, Lower Austria.
Subsequently it will be dealt with the motivation of duke Albrecht II to found such a huge cloister. This represents the base for interpreting the utilization and importance of the charterhouse. The foundation building will be analysed by the sources in order to reconstruct its appearance and its furnishing; in that context a large modification of the church in the 15th century is of great importance. A false ceiling has been constructed beneath the original
gothic vault. For that reason the gothic vault of the foundation structure is still preserved with parts of the ornamental painting. The foundation of the double-size charterhouse assumes that there must have existed four more cells for monks than the twenty existing ones. Therefore it
can be supposed that the present “Bibliothekshof” was different in appearance.
Furthermore it is shown that not only a part of the whole charterhouse served as the duke’s residential area but the whole building and its furnishing and equipment. The comparison with contemporary Habsburg foundations such as those of the duke’s brothers, the former
charterhouse Mauerbach, Lower Austria, and the Cistercian monastery of Neuberg/Mürz, Styria, which have been built a few years earlier, shows that the utilization of the charterhouse has to be looked at in a wider connection. Not only economic and political factors were of
importance but also the fact that these foundations were supposed to serve as and contribute to burial and memorial sites.
