Vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich - basierend auf drei Werken der Selvaliteratur - „Canaima“, „La Vorágine“ und „A Selva“ -, mit der Ära des Kautschukbooms.
Ausgehend vom Rohstoff Kautschuk, dessen Nutzbarmachung und dem daraus resultierenden Wirtschaftsaufschwung, beleuchtet meine Arbeit als zentrales Thema die zermürbenden Erwerbs- und Lebensbedingungen der Seringueiros.
Die Darstellung von Aufstieg, Blütezeit und Niedergang der sogenannten Gummiwirtschaft – getragen durch das Berufsbild des Kautschukzapfers – wird unter anderem exemplarisch an der Entwicklung der Stadt Manaus festgemacht.
Zitate aus der originalsprachlichen Literatur, Bildmaterialien und Tabellen ergänzen vorliegende Arbeit.

This thesis deals, based on three masterpieces of the Latin American selva literature, „Canaima“, „La Vorágine“ and „A Selva“, with the course of the Amazon rubber boom.
Starting with the clarification of the fundamental question „What is rubber?“, followed by a historical overview of the various steps leading to the rubber´s utilization for commercial purposes and the consequent economic upswing this paper´s key topic is to highlight the grueling working and living conditions of the seringueiros.
The appearance of rise, flowering and decline of the so-called rubber industry - borne by the professional image of the rubber tappers - is outlined among other things as an example in the development of the city of Manaus.
Literary quotes in their original language, pictorial material and charts complement this work.
