Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt die Darstellung der Stadt in den Filmen von Woody Allen. Der amerikanische Regisseur hat eine lange Filmkarriere vorzuweisen, die sich über 4 Dekaden erstreckt. Obwohl er Filmwerke verschiedenster Genres und Themen produziert hat, ist er eher bekannt für seine Stadt-bezogenen Filme. Die Stadt wird als zentrales Motiv und Subjekt repräsentiert, auf die der Film basiert. Die Metropole ist nicht einfach nur eine Kulisse oder utopische Vision, sondern spielt oft eine besondere Rolle.
Der Umfang dieser Arbeit liegt darin, diese besondere Rolle der Stadt zu untersuchen und zu analysieren. Es heißt so oft, dass Allen dafür berühmt sei, ein bestimmtes Filmgenre geschaffen zu haben, das eng mit der Stadt verbunden ist: eine Komödie, die ernsthafte Themen behandelt, in einer sehr bekannten Stadt stattfindet und das Ganze durch Jazz oder klassische Musik hervorgehoben wird. Bis Ende der 90er Jahre war der Drehort ein stilisiertes New York, das Intellektuelle und Künstler angezogen hat und durch Allens neurotische und komische Persona repräsentiert wurde. Dieses New York wurde zum Symbol der Stadt, die niemals schläft. In letzter Zeit konzentriert sich der Regisseur - dank besserer finanzieller Unterstützung - auf große Westeuropäische Städte wie London, Rom, Paris und Barcelona. Die Stadt wird wieder in den Vordergrund gerückt, nur werden hier die historischen Monumente anders dargestellt als in früheren Filmen. Wenn Allen ein bestimmtes Image von New York geschaffen hat, welches den Europäern mehr als den Amerikanern gefällt, so präsentiert sich seine Darstellung vom Rom oder Paris dem Zuschauer eher von der klassischen bzw. touristischen Perspektive, die in Hollywood entstanden ist.

This paper deals with representations of cities in the films of Woody Allen. The American director has a career spanning over four decades, having thus produced a large body of work. Although he has written and directed movies of various genres and topics, Allen is best known for his city films. These particular films present the city as a central motif and character that support and influence the narrative. The metropolis is not simply a backdrop or a utopic vision, but it often plays a special role. The scope of this thesis is to explore and analyse this special role. Allen is said to have created a certain type of film connected to the city: a comedy that explores serious themes, takes place in a well-known city, and is underlined by Jazz or classical music. Up to the late 1990s the location was a stylized New York that attracted intellectuals and artists and was introduced through Allen’s neurotic, comic persona, who became the face of the city that never sleeps. Recently, due to better financial opportunities, the director has been concentrating on major Western European cities like London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona. The city has once again developed to a central character, but these historical sites are portrayed differently. If Allen created a certain image of New York that is more appreciated by Europeans than by Americans, the depiction of Rome or Paris might remind the audience of the classical tourist perspective that was created in Hollywood.
