Abstract

The main focus the of my diploma thesis with the title „Ethnicity as a location factor. Investment behaviour of German and Austrian enterprises in Sibiu/Hermannstadt“ is the investigation of ethnic factors in the investment behaviour of German and Austrian investors in Sibiu county, situated in the centre of Romania. Sibiu was founded by the Saxon colonists in the 12th century. In the medieval time, the town was a strong centre of the guilds and this has led to its progressional economical development. At the beginning of the 19th century the medieval castle converts itself into a modern town. As from 2000, the economy has grown in Sibiu in a persistent rhythm and the County of Sibiu belongs today to the most developed counties of Romania. The successful development was possible thanks to a big number of efficient enterprises. In the statistics of the enterprises with foreign participation, Germany and Austria book the leading positions. The research question - to what extent the German and Austrian investors have been influenced by the multicultural roots, the history, the genotype and the solidarity of the region - has been answerd on base of the analysis of the investment development and several qualitative interviews with managers of different enterprises and officials. This town, which in 2007 also had the honor to present itself as a cultural capital of Europe is deemed to be a model for many towns in Romania and South Eastern Europe. By means of the booming business development, the town has increased the position as a "hot spot" both in the country as well as on Central Eastern European level. Not only the new economic structure and the nonexistent unemployment show the model status of the former capital of Transylvania, but also the social and cultural development of its inhabitants. The best example of the social maturity is also the fact that the Saxon mayor, Klaus Johannis, has been elected for the third time in a row with nearly 90% (unique in Romania) of the voices. The evaluation of the qualitative interviews with the managers of the different enterprises shows the unequivocal result that the ethnicity was the determining factor in the location choice. The cultural nearness and the history, together with other location advantages like the multilingualism, the wage differential, the special geographic position and the favorable investment climate that it’s supported by the active German city administration and which is investor friendly, are the most important reasons to invest in Sibiu.
