Abstract
(Deutsch)
How to faint for fun.
Abstract
(Englisch)
The Choking Game and it’s spread on YouTube is a complex phenomenon which is the issue of this media scientific thesis How to faint for fun. The Choking Game auf YouTube. Fainting Games, another name for the Choking Game, are mostly practiced by adolescents to get high, to test their limits or maybe to face death. This thesis is researching on the context and motives why adolescents practice fainting games and upload them on YouTube. It could be a part of growing-up or simple boredom which is making adolescents strangle themselves to unconsciousness. The research is based on so-called Fainting Clips which where chosen randomly from YouTube via keyword search function. The chosen clips were classified and film scientifically analized, not to be forgotten the comments of the clips. Clips that deal with Fainting Games can be categorized as tutorials and are mostly practiced by male adolescents in the age of nine to sixteen years. Self-expression with the help of home made videos has become a part of the identification process in growing up for young people whereas YouTube has become something like mirror instance within the web 2.0. Flagging of the clips aggravated the research, since most of the fainting clips are immediately deleted due to conflicting the term’s of YouTube. All clips shown in this thesis were downloaded and archived. Another problem is the lack of established references or statistics hence accidents, lethal or not, cannot be classified as an accident from fainting. A DVD containing a part of the analyzed clips is attached.
