In der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit werden die Kinderromane The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1899), Five Children and It (1902) und The Railway Children (1906) von der spätviktorianischen Schriftstellerin Edith Nesbit zum Thema soziale Didaktik analysiert. Der Begriff „soziale Didaktik“ umfasst die Vermittlung von sozialen sowie politischen Werten eines Autors an seine Leserschaft. Edith Nesbit ist bekannt für ihr Engagement in der sozialistischen Fabian Society, gegründet 1884 in England. Ziel der Organisation war es eine Gleichstellung der verschiedenen Gesellschaftsschichten Englands zu erreichen. Gleichzeitig sollte der schlechten wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Lage der Arbeiterschicht, gekennzeichnet durch Armut, schlechte Gesundheitspflege und zu niedriger Bezahlung, entgegengewirkt werden. Der erste Teil der Arbeit umfasst einen historischen Überblick über das spätviktorianische England. Dabei stehen die Bereiche Wirtschaft, Gesellschaft und Politik im Vordergrund. Anschließend wird die literarisch-theoretische Thematik der Ideologien in der Kinderliteratur erläutert. Dieses theoretische Hintergrundwissen ermöglicht eine bessere Nachvollziehbarkeit der Literaturanalyse, welche den Hauptteil der Diplomarbeit ausmacht. Im Zuge der Literaturanalyse, welche sich auf die literarischen Aspekte wie Erzählform, Charakterisierung, Sprache, Gender, Magie, Struktur und Chronologie stützt, werden die drei Texte im Bezug auf Nesbits politische Einstellung und ihre sozialen Normvorstellungen untersucht. Die vorliegende Forschungsfrage beschäftigt sich demnach mit Nesbits politischer und sozialer Ideologie und inwieweit sie diese ihren Leser/-innen übermittelt. Die Forschungsergebnisse werden in der Zusammenfassung dargestellt.

In this diploma thesis the three children’s novels The Story of the Treasure Seekers (1988), Five Children and It (1902) and The Railway Children (1906) by the late Victorian writer Edith Nesbit will be analysed with regard to social didacticism. The term ‘social didacticism’ refers to the transmission of the author’s social and political values to his or her readership. Edith Nesbit is known for her political engagement in the socialist Fabian Society, founded in 1884 in England. The main aim of the Society was to achieve equality among England’s social classes. Simultaneously the organisation sought to counteract the bad social and economic conditions of the working classes, marked by poverty, bad hygienic conditions and insufficient payment. The first part of this thesis includes a historical background of late Victorian England. The aspects of economy, society and politics will be foregrounded. Afterwards the theoretical issue of ideologies in children’s literature will be outlined. The theoretical background knowledge facilitates the understanding of the following literary analysis, which constitutes the main part of the diploma thesis. In the literary analysis, focusing on aspects such as narration, characterisation, language, gender, magical elements, structure and chronology, the three primary texts will be examined with regard to Nesbit’s political and social values and beliefs. The underlying research question is therefore concerned with Nesbit’s social and political ideology and to what extent she transmits it to her readers. The research findings will be presented in the conclusion.
