Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis tries to analyse to what extent the film “Romance” by Catherine Breillat from 1999 contains provocative potential. In order to define of what the phenomenon of the provocation consists, the author consults the article “Der kurze Atem der Provokation” (1989) by Rainer Paris. Paris identifies the following five structural attributes of provocative acts: 1. the breaking of norms, 2. the surprise, 3. the orientation towards the conflict, 4. the reciprocity or the dependence on the reaction and 5. the exposure. All those aspects can indeed be observed in the case of the film “Romance” by Catherine Breillat (1. pornographic elements, 2. pornography in mainstream cinema, 3. problematic statements concerning men and women as well as concerning their relationships, 4. the film’s dependence on his audience, 5. What the reactions to the film tell about its critics), but nevertheless the systematic proof of this analogy will finally not be sufficient in order to claim objectively that the oeuvre “Romance” represents a provocation. Because of several subjective aspects and influences which act on the process of provocation, as well as because of the fact that no one can ever know entirely the intentions of other persons, the act of provocation must remain an impossible figure.
