Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit mit dem Titel „Aufgaben und Funktionen evangelischer Kirchenzeitun-gen und Zeitschriften. Eine Bestandsaufnahme“, geht der Frage nach, wozu es evangelische Kirchen-zeitungen und Zeitschriften gibt und welche Funktionen sie zu erfüllen haben. Nach einer allgemein medientheoretischen Einführung, in der die Begriffe Medium, Massenkommunikation und Medien-wirkungen aus publizistikwissenschaftlicher Sicht definiert werden, folgt eine theologische Reflexi-on. Ausgehend von theologischen Modellen von Kommunikation wird das Verhältnis von kirchlicher Pressearbeit und Verkündigungsauftrag herausgearbeitet. Dabei kristallisiert sich heraus, dass die Kirche die Pflicht hat, das Evangelium auch mittels kirchlicher Zeitschriften und Zeitungen zu ver-künden. Kirchenzeitungen und Zeitschriften tun dies aber idealiter in größtmöglicher Unabhängig-keit von der Institution Kirche. Wie diese Unabhängigkeit in der Praxis aussieht, zeigt sich an Redak-tionsstatuten und Leitbildern evangelischer Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, die in dieser Arbeit analy-siert werden. Darüber hinaus gibt diese Arbeit einen Überblick über die evangelische Pressearbeit in Österreich.
Die Diplomarbeit kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass es Aufgabe und Funktion evangelischer Kirchenzei-tungen ist, am Verkündigungsauftrag der Kirche mitzuarbeiten und ihren Teil dazu beizutragen so-wie als unabhängiges Medium die Institution Kirche – theologische Entwicklungen in ihr sowie ihre Praxis – loyal und wohlwollend, aber auch kritisch zu begleiten.

The main focus of this master thesis is the investigation of the reason for and function of protestant church print media (magazines, journals) - as the title 'Duties and functions of protestant church magazines and journals. A survey.' already indicates. A general introduction to media theory, clarify-ing the terms medium, mass communication and media effects from the point of view of media stud-ies, is followed by a theological reflection on the topic. Starting from theological models of communi-cation, the text aims to elaborate the relationship between press relations on part of the church and the church’s proclamation task. What becomes evident here is that the church carries the duty of preaching the gospel, also by means of the respective affiliated church magazines and journals. In doing so, however, they strive for the highest possible level of independence from the church itself as an institution. Which form this independence takes in practice can be seen from the editorial consti-tutions and mission statements of the protestant magazines and journals analysed for the present study. Apart from this, the paper at hand offers an overview of the status quo of protestant press relations work in Austria.
The conclusion of this paper is that it is the duty and function of protestant print media to actively support the church’s proclamation task. While doing their share in this task, they also play a role as an independent medium of the church as an institution, accompanying theological developments within this body as well as its practices with a loyal and benevolent, but nonetheless critical eye.
