Diese Diplomarbeit soll die sozialen Kosten, die Struktur und die Auswirkungen der Remittances von Thailand nach Myanmar untersuchen. Die sozialen Kosten, welche die burmesischen MigrantInnen aufgrund des mangelnden rechtlichen Rahmens vonseiten der thailändischen Regierung für die Remittances zahlen müssen, scheinen nach 25 Jahren extensiver Migration geringer zu werden. Während sich die Migration der BurmesInnen für die Wirtschaft Thailands als durchaus lohnenswert herausstellte, verhalfen die Rücküberweisungen der burmesischen Wirtschaft zu keinem nennenswerten Aufschwung. Das die Remittances in Myanmar kaum wirtschaftlichen Mehrwert stiften liegt daran, dass ein Großteil der Remittances über inoffizielle Kanäle (vor allem über das Hundi System) überwiesen werden, dass Myanmar kaum über finanzielle Infrastruktur verfügt und das Unternehmertum noch immer stark reglementiert wird. Die Remittances werden außerdem hauptsächlich für die wichtigsten Lebensunterhaltungskosten der Empfängerfamilien genutzt, sodass nicht viel für Investitionen übrigbleibt. Die demokratische Wende Myanmars könnte die Situation in den nächsten Jahren zwar ändern, gegenwärtig kämpft die Regierung jedoch noch mit vielen strukturellen Problemen.

The aim of this thesis was to find out the costs, the structure and the effects of remittances flowing from Thailand to Myanmar. It’s shown that Burmese migrants face a lot of problems when coming to Thailand although they are essential for Thailand’s economic success. This was especially true in the past and is getting better after almost 25 years of extensive Burmese migration into Thailand. The remittances of the migrants didn’t really help the Burmese economy to develop. This is due to the fact that most of the remittances are sent through unofficial channels, especially the Hundi system. Another important reason why they don’t deploy their full potential to develop Myanmar’s economy is the lack of financial infrastructure in Myanmar and the restricted entrepreneurship. Remittances to Myanmar are therefore overwhelmingly used for basic survival instead of investments. The democratic shift in Myanmar might change the situation in the next couple of years but right now Myanmar’s government is still facing a lot of structural problems.
