Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
In this work I present and explain the data reduction process for data taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) on the example of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) star R Sculptoris. This star shows a detached molecular and dusty shell, which is formed during the late evolutionary stage of the AGB, probably initiated by a thermal pulse. In the AGB phase, stars exhibit a strong mass loss and can develop subsequent thermal pulses, where even more mass is expelled from the star into the extended stellar envelope. The exact origin and formation process of detached shells is not clear yet, but is most likely linked to the occurrence of these thermal pulses. With ALMA, the molecular CO(3-2) emission of the detached shell around R Sculptoris can be mapped with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution, focusing on previously detected but not resolved clumps and arcs seen within the shell. The data reduction of the ALMA data on R Sculptoris is done with the Common Astronomy Software Application (CASA), and consists of the data calibration and imaging part, which are both rather complex procedures, because the observations are based on the principles of radio interferometry. The aim of this work is to present tutorial-like instruction and guide through the whole data reduction process, with the help of self-written data reduction scripts, which can also be used for the reduction of other data if slightly adapted. The output images of R Sculptoris are analyzed and conclusions can be drawn on the mass loss history of the AGB star, because the previously detected clumpy structure within the circumstellar envelope turns out to follow a spiral, connecting the detached shell with the star. This spiral structure, which is most certainly created by the interaction of the mass loss with an up to now unknown binary companion, allows to trace the mass loss history since the creation of the detached shell, and investigate the mass loss velocity evolution during this whole period - which is found to have decreased since the formation of the detached shell. This work highlights the high impact of ALMA observations, even in the early science phase, and should serve as supportive handbook for new ALMA users through the various steps from proposal writing to the publication of ALMA data.
