Abstract
(Englisch)
In the early Middle Ages the Avars, an inner-asian group of martial horse people, fled from war against turkish soldiers to eastern European regions. On their way they merged by alliance or repression with several ethnic groups and became a serious threat to the Byzantine Empire. 803 BC Charles the Great shattered the Avar population. Up to this time, the Avars already settled down by concurrent developing individual culture, influenced by multi-ethnic parameters. The settlement engendered the original half-nomadian population to change their economic system to agriculture. So far, there is a lack of information concerning dental pathological disorders in late-avarian populations. The graveyard of Zwölfaxing in Upper-Austria consists of 208 individuals (78 males, 62 females and 68 children). For comparison, two contemporary graveyards were consulted (Fabrizii-Reuer & Reuer 2001, Hedemann 1988). The evaluated parameters of teeth and jaws were intense of caries (26,3 %) and frequency (67,9 %), dental calculus (62,8 %), parodontitis (juvenile 24,2 %, adult 63,7 %, mature 82,2 %, senile 90 %), enamel hypoplasia (30,9 %), abscesses (5,4 %), intra-alveolar pockets (2,8 %) and several degrees of dental abrasion. In this study we also tried to demonstrate demographic conditions on upstanding parameters like mortality rate of subadults (32,7 %), juveniles (4,8 %), adults (31,7%), matures (26,4 %), seniles (4,3 %) and mean mortality age of subadults (3,4), infants I to juvenile (5,0), adult men to senile (41,4), adult women to senile (40,9). The mean life expectancy of a newborn child was 28,3 years. The stomatological features indicate low acknowledgement of dental care, the relatedness of malnutrition and high-carbohydrate diet. Furthermore, vitamin-D-hypovitaminosis was suggested as a cause for enamel hypoplasia (30,9 %) the percental difference between men and women only 0,1 % and serves as a sign of malnutrition during gestation and late-embryonal development.
