Segregation and especially the tendency to ghettoization are an important and often
discussed topic within US-American cities.
Can these tendencies also be found in European cities, and in this context within large
cities in Austrian?
The main focus of this master’s thesis is the evaluation of the housing market and its
parameters in Austria’s large cities Vienna and Graz to provide an answer to the research
question:
Does socio-spatial segregation of ethnic groups in terms of segmented ghettos in
Austrians Vienna and Graz exist?
The structure of this thesis can be described as follows: In the theoretical part, which
consists of chapter one and two, the words integration, segregation and ghetto are
defined and theoretical models of integration will be presented. In the second part which
consists of chapter three, the analyses of the housing markets parameters distribution of
population, rent prices, social housing, structure of ownership and duration of rent in
Vienna and Graz will be presented. The fourth chapter tries to give an answer to the
research question by summing up the most important results of the housing market
analysis of chapter three and the theoretical background of chapter one and two. The
wide field of segregation will be completed by showing the advantages and disadvantages
of segregation. The Brunnenviertel – as good example of integration – will be presented in
the fifth chapter. A summary and an additional outlook in chapter six finalizes this thesis
and illustrates possible ways of city development in Vienna and Graz.
