Spasmolytische Substanzen sind pflanzlichen oder synthetischen Ursprungs und unterdrücken Muskelkontraktionen. Beim Menschen findet man sowohl glatte als auch quergestreifte Muskulatur. Die glatte Muskulatur befindet sich zum Beispeil im Magen-Darmtrakt oder in der Blase. Zur Behandlung von Spasmen dieser Muskulatur werden Muskarinrezeptorantagonisten verwendet, wie Atropin oder Hyoscyamin. Auch pflanzliche Arzneimittel wie Pfefferminzöl oder Mebeverin finden Verwendung. Zur Therapie von Spasmen der Skelettmuskulatur werden Wirkstoffe wie Tizanidin, oder Corisoprodal verwendet. Nebenwirkungen von Spasmolytika sind unter anderem Müdigkeit, Benommenheit, Schlaflosigkeit oder gastrointestinale Störungen.

Antispasmodic or spasmolytic agent is a drug or a herb that suppresses muscle contractions, called spasms.
Humans have smooth and skeletal muscles, thus, requiring different medicatians for controlling spasms.
Smooth muscles for example include the muscle of gut and intestines, antimuascarinics are used to treat smooth muscle spasms acting as a competitive inhibitor or muscarinic receptors at smooth muscles.
Comman medications include atropine and hyoscyamine.
Herbs also used to treat smooth muscle spasms e.g. peppermint oil and mebeverine.
Skeletal muscles are connected to bones, and allow joints to move voluntarily.
Antispaomodic agents used to treat these muscles, including cyclobenzaprine, tiazanidine, and corisoprodal.
They work by mediating nerve signal messages that normally control muscle movement.
Some of the common side effects of spasmolytic drugs are drowiness, dizzines, gastro- intestinal disturbances or insommia.
