Die Dissertation untersucht die kommunikativen Führungsmechanismen terroristischer Gruppen im Internet, genauer gesagt die Kommunikationsabläufe, die zur kommunikativen Leitung innerhalb jihadistischer Online-Gemeinschaften führen. Der Autor verwendet dabei das Konzept der „virtuellen Führung“, oder „kommunikativen Führung im Cyberspace“. Dieses Konzept ist das Ergebnis mehrjähriger induktiv-qualitativer Forschung und teilnehmender Beobachtung auf einem guten Dutzend jihadistischer Diskussionsforen und Webseiten (mehrheitlich arabisch-sprachig).
Die Dissertation benutzt das Konzept der Organisatorischen Netzwerk-Analyse von John Arquilla und David Ronfeldt (2001), innerhalb derer dann Ansätze der Sozial-Anthropologie zur Analyse der kommunikativen Führung verwandt werden. Die auf der Basis sozial-anthropologischer und teilnehmender Beobachtung auf Jihad-Foren zu untersuchenden Hauptelemente virtuell-kommunikativer Führung sind Symbolik, Ritual- und Diskussionsprozesse sowie Theologie des Online-Jihad.

This dissertation argues that online jihad is not merely used for propaganda and the dissemination of jihadi videos, texts, pictures and rhetoric; the discourses in online jihad networks serve communicative leadership purposes. The goal is to strengthen in-group cohesion, raise conformity, radicalize members and inspire to terrorist attacks. Moreover, this dissertation argues that specific processes of communicative leadership are clearly discernible in online jihad, which fulfill leadership and guidance functions.
John Arquilla and David Ronsfeldt (2001) argue that “the information revolution favors the rise of network forms of organization. The network appears to be the next major form of organization – long after tribes, hierarchies and markets – to come into its own to redefine societies, and in so doing, the nature of conflict and cooperation […]” The information revolution with the Internet as a mass medium has fostered the emergence of virtual social networks. These networks serve as organizational tools for different kinds of subcultures. Every organizational pattern displays certain mechanisms of leadership, decision making as well as command and control. In virtual networks, participative communicative and ritualistic processes serve as leadership mechanisms that guide the online and at times even offline actions of network members.
