Abstract
(Deutsch)
I vorgenommen: Smart (Stufe 1-4), Your Turn (Stufe 1-4) and More 1- More 4.
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis is a contribution to the practical research carried out in the field of Global Learning for school instruction for the secondary school level I in Austria. Due to the unstoppable developments towards globalism and the idea of ‘one world’ Global Learning should become an integral part of the school landscape. Global Learning also goes hand in hand with competence orientation. It seeks to convey key competencies and can therefore be combined with nearly every school subject. English classes have the advantage that the simultaneous language acquisition with its identity creating function of language - and its key role for the understanding of other cultures - can be linked with the imparting of intercultural content. The aim of this thesis was to find answers to the following research questions: (1) Which connection capacity does Global Learning have to competence-oriented English lessons in the secondary level I and (2) does Global Learning get enough room in Austrian English school books for the secondary level I and if so which quality standards are met? In order to find an answer to these questions, the theoretical part of the thesis was split up into three chapters: In the first chapter, the term Global Learning, its origin, development and aims are explained, and its anchoring in the curriculum is investigated. In the second chapter, the same is done with the term “competence”. The third chapter introduces and compares different competence models. In the second part of the thesis (chapters 4, 5 and 6), an analysis of Austrian English school books for the secondary school level I was carried out. All in all, three different English books for all four grades were analysed: Smart (grades 1-4), Your Turn (grades 1-4) and More 1 - More 4. The results showed that (1) the subject English definitely has the potential to contribute to Global Learning at school. As for research question (2), the analysis showed that the books show a lot of potential for Global Learning and that in some of the 12 books Global Learning has been implemented to a certain degree. However, there is a large potential for improvement since the topics offered in the books are often not suitable for the respective age group and the world knowledge of the pupils and would thus make necessary further explanations and exercises by the teacher.
