Diese Diplomarbeit widmet sich George Padmore (1902–1959), einem afrikanischen Kommunisten und Panafrikanisten. Die Arbeit liegt in der Form einer politischen Biographie vor. Padmores theoretische und praktische Entwicklung soll in ihren historischen Bezügen dargestellt werden. Der Zeitraum, in dem er gelebt hat, und die Orte, an denen er sich aufgehalten und an denen er gearbeitet hat (unter anderem die USA, Deutschland, die UdSSR, England und Ghana), machen ihn zu einer historischen Figur, an der die Auswirkungen zentraler historischer Entwicklungen des 20. Jahrhunderts festgemacht werden können. Padmores Biographie lässt sich grob in zwei Teile fassen, die auch mit seiner theoretischen Haltung und Entwicklung in Verbindung stehen. Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt mit einer biographischen Skizze seiner Kindheit und Jugendjahre in Trinidad ein und folgt Padmore auf seiner Reise zum Studienaufenthalt in den USA, wo es zu seiner Politisierung im Rahmen der KP kam (Abschnitt 2). Anschließend wird in Abschnitt 3 Padmores Karriere in der Kommunistischen Internationalen beleuchtet, in der er schnell zu einer prominenten Persönlichkeit aufstieg und es bis zum Leiter des International Trade Union Committee of the Negro Worker (ITUCNW) brachte. Schließlich wird der Bruch Padmores mit der Komintern thematisiert und in weiterer Folge sein gesteigertes Afrika–Engagement seit den 1930er Jahren analysiert (Abschnitt 4). In diesem Zeitraum war er gemeinsam mit C.L.R. James im International African Service Bureau in London (IASB) tätig. Nach 1934 zeichnet sich Padmores politische Aktivität durch eine verstärkte Hinwendung zum Panafrikanismus aus. Der Abessinienfeldzug Italiens stellt einen Bruch in der politischen Ausrichtung und Schwerpunktsetzung seiner politischen Arbeit dar, indem er sich stärker in der internationalen panafrikanischen Bewegung engagiert. Damit hat eine zweite Periode seines Lebens begonnen. Weitere wichtige Bezugspunkte seiner Biographie sind der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges und damit zusammenhängend sein Kampf gegen den Vormarsch der Faschisten und die Ausbeutung der kolonisierten Völker in dem Krieg um Europa, sowie schließlich die Organisation des fünften Panafrikanischen Kongresses in Manchester gemeinsam mit Kwame Nkrumah. Die Arbeit schließt mit einem Blick auf die Jahre nach 1945, in denen Padmore als wacher Beobachter die veränderte globale Situation und die einsetzende Dekolonisierung verfolgt und als einer der engsten Berater Kwame Nkrumahs politisch tätig war.

This thesis concerns the subject of George Padmore (1902-1959), an African communists and Pan-Africanists. Born in Trinidad, Padmore lived in various European countries and travelled to Africa several times, where he settled down in Ghana in 1957. He worked as an advisor to Kwame Nkrumah. Methodologically the thesis has the form of a political biography. The work gives a view of Padmores theoretical and practical developments which shall be linked with their historical references. The period in which he was active, and the places where he lived and worked (including the USA, Germany, the USSR, England and Ghana), make him a historical figure. Following his story, the consequences of the principal historical developments of the 20th Century are exposed. Padmores biography can roughly be divided into two parts, both of which are connected to his theoretical stance and development. The work starts with a biographical sketch of his childhood and teenage years in Trinidad and continues to follow Padmore on his journey to study in the USA. There his political engagement began when he actively got involved in the Communist International (section 2). Padmores career in the Communist International, where he quickly became a prominent figure and took over the post as head of the International Trade Union Committee of the Negro Worker (ITUCNW), is illuminated in section 3. Subsequently, Padmores split with the Comintern is analysed as well as his increased engagement in Africa since the 1930s (section 4). During this period, he worked together with C.L.R. James in the International African Service Bureau (IASB) in London. After 1934, Padmores political activity is characterized by a greater focus on Pan-Africanism. The Abyssinian War of Italy represents a rupture in his political orientation and in the emphasis of his political work, due to the increase of his involvement in the international Pan-African movement. This marks the beginning of the second period of his life. Other important reference points in his biography are the beginning of World War II and in connection to this occurrence, his struggle against the advance of the fascists and the exploitation of the colonized population in this war. Then, the organization of the Fifth Pan-African Congress in Manchester is analysed. The thesis concludes with an outlook on the years after 1945, in which Padmore is a close observer of the changing global situation and the onset of decolonization. Until his death in 1959 Padmore remains one of Kwame Nkrumahs closest advisers. Nevertheless, the core of this work accentuates his lifes efforts until the Fifth Pan-African Congress of 1945.
