Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht 15 Migrant_innenorganisationen in Österreich, die sich in oder für die jeweiligen Herkunftsländer engagieren und deren Engagement auf eine Verbesserung der dortigen Lebensbedingungen abzielt. Damit gelten sie als „neue“ Akteur_innen im aktuellen politischen Diskurs zu Migration und Entwicklung und erfahren wachsende Aufmerksamkeit. Mit einem transnationalen Ansatz wurden die Zusammensetzung, die Ziele, die Schwerpunkte, die Koordination und die Barrieren der untersuchten Organisationen sowie deren Anspruch
an entwicklungspolitische Prinzipien analysiert. Ein wesentliches Ergebnis ist dabei, dass aufgrund der Diversität der Organisationen keine klare Kategorisierung dieser möglich ist. Das bringt mit sich, dass einige der hier untersuchten Organisationen teilweise nicht von traditionellen Entwicklungsorganisationen abzugrenzen sind oder auch Maßnahmen der Organisationen die sich auf Österreich beziehen und/oder auf die Integration von Migrant_innen in Österreich, nicht von dem herkunftslandorientierten Engagement losgelöst betrachtet werden können. Ein zentrales Merkmal aller Organisationen ist jedoch ihr ehrenamtlicher Charakter, der wiederum mit sich bringt, dass die Initiativen der untersuchten Vereine auf Grenzen stoßen – vor allem hinsichtlich der Finanzierung und hinsichtlich der zeitlichen/personellen Ressourcen. Mithilfe der Istanbul Principles, Prinzipien um die Wirksamkeit zivilgesellschaftlicher EZA
zu steigern, konnte gezeigt werden, dass die hier untersuchten Organisationen ähnliche Grundsätze wie etablierte zivilgesellschaftliche Entwicklungsorganisationen haben und daher
auch als solche betrachtet werden können, wenngleich sich die meisten untersuchten Organisationen nicht als solche in Österreich angemessen anerkannt sehen.

This study examines 15 migrant organisations in Austria, which organise or support development projects in their countries of origin. For this reason they are acknowledged as “new” actors in the current round of migration and development and gain growing attention in the policy discourse.With a transnational approach the composition, the objectives, the focus and the coordination
of the organisations are analysed as well as the barriers they are confronted with. Furthermore,their awareness of developmental principles is of interest. Due to the diversity of the examined organisations it is difficult to construct a typology. Related to this, some organisations cannot be clearly distinguished from traditional development organisations. Additionally, certain initiatives focusing Austria and/or the integration of migrants in Austria cannot be considered separately from the organisations’ engagement in countries of origin. However, what the examined organisations have in common is their voluntary character. Hence, they are confronted with difficulties regarding funding and time constraints. Finally, it could be shown that the organisations apply nearly the same principles like
established civic development organisations. As a result, they could be likewise seen as development actors although they do not feel adequately recognised in Austria.
